Will Wade began his career as Clemson male team bachelor student manager from 2002-2005. He worked under Larry Shyatt and Oliver Purnell, who gave him further opportunities as a graduate assistant (2005-06) and Director of Operations Basket (2006-07). Tommy Amaker then took him as the first person employed as a Harvard male basketball coach where he was responsible for helping recruit the top 25 classes for the program. He stayed at Harvard for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons before heading off to VCU.
Will Wade was taken as an assistant head coach-when Shaka Smart was at VCU (he was the first person to be hired Smart as he was an Amaker's). He helped VCU to four consecutive postseason appearances, including a trip to the Final Four 2011. VCU completed the 2012-13 season with an overall score of 27-9 and No. 1 national rankings. 23. VCU Rams is one of only five national teams that won 27 matches or more in each season from 2009-2013 (others are Duke, Kansas, Syracuse and Ohio State). In four years as Wade's assistant coach, VCU is 111-37 (.750) with three direct trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Head coaching career
Chattanooga
In 2013, Wade left his assistant at VCU to lead the Chattanooga Mocs basketball program. In his two seasons as head coach, he posted both the overall victory and conference record, and gave Mocs their first 20 win seasons in 10 years. He was named Coach of the Year Southern Conference 2014.
VCU
After two seasons in Chattanooga, Wade returns to VCU to take on the position of head coach left by Shaka Smart. In his first season back at VCU, Wade guided the team to their first regular 10th Atlantic Championship championship and an overall 25-11 record. VCU managed to reach the A10 conference championship game match for the fourth season in a row, falling to St. Joseph. The team won at least 24 games, VCU and Kansas are the only NCAA schools to achieve that achievement in the last 10 seasons. The Rams also make their upright NCAA 6th tournament, one of only 8 teams in the country to do so. The VCU made it to the 32nd round where they fell to Oklahoma 85-81. Wade ranks second in polls for the A10 trainers this year.
