The first game featured Mountain Climber against Oklahoma's perennial powerhouse. Despite being two goals and underdogs, the mountaineers played a great game to upset Sooners in Norman, 41-27. It was followed by a 19-18 victory at home to rivals Mayland. The third match against Richmond, was a blast, in which Mountaineers won 43-10.
Their first loss of the season came to their rivals, Pittsburgh, at Backyard Brawl, with a score of 16-13. In a fight, fans are introduced to Allry's All-American linebacker Talley. He intercepted Dan Marino's pass and blocked a kick for safety in a 16-13 West Virginia loss to the No. 2-rated Panthers. The 1982 game is one of only five times that both teams are nationally ranked: Pitt tops No. 2 and West Virginia is 14th after an angry win over Oklahoma and Maryland.
The Mountaineers rebounded with a hard-fought 20-13 slugfest over Boston College, and quarterback Doug Flutie. WVU traveled to Blacksburg to face rival Virginia Tech, in a match, Mountaineers won 16-6.
The following week, Mountaineers hosted the number 1 team at Nation, Penn State Nittany Lions at home. The WVU offense never rolled over Penn State's prestigious defense, which pitched a 24-0 shutout. WVU rebounded once again with its own explosive against East Carolina, 30-3. The Mountaineers travel to Philadelphia to take the Temple. Owls lost 20-17.
West Virginia closed the season with dominating victories over Rutgers, and Syracuse. It gave them a 9-2 record, ranked 10th nationally, and a trip to the Gator Bowl to pick up Florida State.
