The Louisville Cardinals (also known as the Cards team) played at the Atlantic Coast Conference, starting in 2014. While playing in the Big East Conference from 2005 to 2013, the Cardinals won 17 regular season titles Big East and 33 Big East Tournament tournaments with a total of 50 Big East Championships in all sports. With their 2013 Sugar Bowl performance against the Florida Gators, the Cardinals football team is the only football team in the Commonwealth of Kentucky that has emerged and won two Bowl Championship Series bowls, having beaten Wake Forest 24-13 at the 2007 Orange Bowl and Florida 33- 23 at Sugar Bowl 2013. On November 28, 2012, Louisville accepted and accepted an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference and become a participating member in all sports in 2014.

Since 2000, Louisville is the only NCAA team to win a BCS bowl match; to perform in the men's NCAA Division I basketball, Final Four, World Series of Higher Education, and NCAA Division Basketball Division I; and finished as runner-up in Men's Football College Cup. This is one of only six schools that have appeared more than once in each of the following events - a BCS bowl, boys basketball and Final Fours, and College World Series - and a span of seven school periods in Louisville (2006) -07 until 2012-13) is the shortest among these schools. Also, it was the first school ever to win a BCS bowl match, appearing in the Men's and Women's Final Basket, and appearing in the World Series of Colleges in the same school year, doing so in 2012-13.

Under the guidance of Athletic Director Tom Jurich, Cardinals has seen great athletic and institutional growth, spending more than $ 150 million on improving sports facilities while maintaining strong fans support and Title IX compliance. U of L currently includes 13 women's teams and 10 male teams. Total sales of U of L merchandise, tripled since 2001, is now ranked 32nd nationally.

U of L finishes 2015-16 year rank 29 in NACDA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. The 2015-16 season starts with Louisville who is ranked 24th through the fall of the autumn finals.

The UofL basketball tradition was founded by the natives of Muhlenberg, Coach Bernard "Peck" Hickman. The cards have never experienced a losing season in Hickman's 23 years, before his arrival the team had only 11 seasons of victory. In 1956, Hickman's team won the NIT, later considered a national championship equivalent to the NCAA tournament. After retirement, Hickman became the School Athletics Director and hired assistant John Wooden and the future of Denny Crum Hall of Fame, who led the team to two NCAA Division I basketball championships (1980 and 1986) and six Final Fours. The men's basketball team is currently ranked fifth in the all-time NCAA Tournament win and has entered the top five averages every year since the 1982-83 season. Enduring rivals include the University of Kentucky, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Memphis.

Under the guidance of head coach John L. Smith (1998-2002) and Bobby Petrino (2003-2007), Louisville's football program went to nine consecutive bowl matches that ended in the 2007 season. After three years of absence under coach Kragthorpe from 2007-2009, Louisville has made eight consecutive bowl games under Coach Charlie Strong and Bobby Petrino.

Under the coach of Smith, Cardinals spent 11 weeks in AP Top 25, including finalist # 17 in 2000.

Under Coach Petrino, the Cardinals are in all but three of the weekly AP polls since the start of the 2004 season. These included the final # 6 in 2004 and 2006, as well as the final finish # 19 in 2005.

In the 2004 season, the Cardinals went 11-1 and won the US Conference Championships; their only defeat was against third-placed Miami, a game in which the Cardinals led by 17 in the third quarter before falling. The Cardinals go to Liberty Bowl, where they beat the # 10-ranked and previously unbeatable Boise State.

In 2005, Cardinals finished 9-3 after falling to Virginia Tech in Gator Bowl and finished the season ranked # 19 in Poll AP and # 20 at Poll Coach.

In 2006, the Cardinals started the season with # 13 in the AP poll and finished the season with a 12-1 record, their first Big East Conference title and finished the season with a 24-13 win over the Atlantic Coast Conference Wake Forest champion at the Orange Bowl. The card finished the 2006 season ranking # 6 in Poll AP and # 7 in Coaching Polls, while ranking # 6 in the Bowl Championship Series Poll.

On January 9, 2007, Steve Kragthorpe was introduced as the new head coach of the Cardinals, within 48 hours after Bobby Petrino announced his departure to take the position of head coaching with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League. The Cardinals went 6-6 in Kragthorpe's first season and the second season 5-7. He was fired after his third season (2009) ended with a disappointing 4-8 record. Substitutes for Kragthorpe are Charlie Strong, former defensive coordinator in Florida, and the second African American who leads the Cardinals program.

None of the recent successes of the football program will be possible without the vision and efforts of former Kentucky All-American and national champion coaches (at the University of Miami) Howard Schnellenberger, who became head coach from 1985 to 1994. His greatest achievements in U of L was a 34-7 victory over Alabama Crimson Tide in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl (Alabama finished 7-5), which culminated in the first national rankings of U of L (11) and a 10-1-1 record.

The home of Louisville University football program is Cardinal John Father's Stadium.

UofL football programs annually play for the Governor's Cup (awarded to winners of Louisville-Kentucky football games) and The Keg of Nails (awarded to winners of the annual Louisville-Cincinnati football game). Both trophies are currently in Louisville.

The movie "The Replacements" is rumored to be based on former Cardinal quarterback Ed Rubbert (played by Keanu Reeves), who led the 1987 strike team at the Washington Redskins to a 3-0 record on the way to the Super Bowl XXI franchise championship.

Retirement T-shirt
U of L has retired T-shirts (not numbers) from former Cardinal footballers: Bruce Armstrong, Ray Buchanan, Doug Buffone, Ernie Green, Tom Jackson, Joe Jacoby, Otto Knop, Lenny Lyles, Sam Madison, Frank Minnifield, Chris Redman, Otis Wilson, Roman Oben, Dwayne Woodruff, and Jeff Brohm.
  • The only number that was retired by the Cardinals soccer program was 16, charged by Johnny Unitas.

    • The leading amateur and professional golfer, Derek Fathauer enjoys four solid seasons in Louisville as Cardinal. He was the first ever player from the University of Louisville to be named the All-American.

Volleyball has traditionally been one of UofL's most successful programs, led for 15 years by head coach Leonid Yelin, who won his career percentage at position 77 on the 9th rank among active coaches before retiring after the 2010 season. He was replaced by the former a U of L Anne Kordes player, who has spent the previous seven seasons as head coach in Saint Louis. During the 2005 season, UofL was ranked # 6 on the way to a record of 30-3, the regular season for the title of the Great East, and the second trip to Sweet 16. In the latest 2012 season, the team averaged 2,341 fans while playing mainly at KFC Yum! Center. Their traditional Cardinal Arena home, with 840 seats, has become too small for the current team's popularity, with fans turning away in some games. While U of L has been looking for state funding to expand Cardinal Arena to better meet the demands of fans and prevent unsafe "stand-alone" people, they recently opted to move full-time into KFC Yum! Center; of his 19 home games in the 2012 season, 15 are scheduled for the facility. U of L also hosted the 2005 Big East Volleyball tournament and the first two rounds of the NCAA volleyball tournament at the Kentucky International Expo Center in Downtown Louisville, and will host the Fourth Final Women 2012 at KFC Yum! Center.

In 2005, two Cardinals, seniors Lena Ustymenko and Jennifer Hoffman, were named the second All-American team. Previously only one East Big volleyball player was crowned as All-American. Ustymenko was also crowned as the 2005 Great East player of the year and Hoffman led the nation in reaching a percentage in Card 6-2 violations. The program has won 15 of its 16 final conference titles (with others in 1983) and has been a 17-times NCAA tournament since 1982, with 47 players making their all-conference teams. The team has a 157-19 record at Cardinal Arena, and 17-6 at KFC Yum! Center.

The cardinal's volleyball team has won 18 conference championships, from C-USA to Big East, American, and ACC.

Recently, after Cardinals joined ACC in 2014, Cardinals won the 2015 ACC title, the first ACC crown to be won by the Louisville team. Senior drafter Katie George, also known as Miss Kentucky USA that year, was named the Player of the Year and the Setter of the Year. In addition, Kordes was appointed as Coach of the Year, and libero Molly Sauer was named Best Players and New Year.

The Cardinal volleyball team moved back to the newly expanded Cardinal Arena in 2017.

    Rivalry

    Kentucky Wildcats

The Louisville Cardinals rivalry with the Kentucky Wildcats is widely regarded as one of the most intense college rivals in the United States. It is also one of the few rivalries to be equally intense in basketball and soccer, and almost every other sport as well. Men's basketball game is called the Battle for Bluegrass; a football game is officially called the Governor's Cup.

In the early years after the competition returns anyone who will win a football match will continue to lose the game of basketball. In 2003, Louisville broke that tradition by winning soccer and basketball games. Since then, Kentucky has completed double double, in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons. Louisville won football and bastketball again in 2012.

Unlike many rivalries in the country that have been played continuously for decades, the two schools have experienced a long period from the rare 1930s to the 1980s that face each other. They often played from the 1900s to the 1920s. Since the renewal of the men's basketball rivalry in 1983-1984 Britain led the modern competition 25-13 and the 34-16 series of all time. Since both teams returned to playing football in 1994, U of L led the modern 15-9 series but the all-time series tied 15-15.

In the fierce competition with the Kentucky Wildcats, teams that have won football games have lost the following basketball games every year, except in 2003 and 2012 (when UofL won both) and 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 (when the UK won both).

    Cincinnati Bearcats

Recognized more for rigorous basketball competition and competition, U of L and UC have a football competition that has spanned within the four conference ranges of the Missouri Valley Conference, to the Metro Conference to the US Conference, and more recently at the Great Eastern Conference, which at 2013 is renamed the American Athletic Conference. It is believed to be the oldest rivalry for the Louisville football team and the second oldest for Cincinnati, just behind the annual game with Miami RedHawks.

On the gridiron, both teams competed to get the Tong of Nails Trophy, although the series has been on hiatus since 2013. Bearcats lead the series 30-22-1.

    Virginia Cavaliers

Since joining the ACC in 2014, Cardinals have become part of a budding rivalry with Virginia. Both teams have found themselves at or near the top of the conference standings in many sports, including baseball, basketball, and soccer. Given that UL is appointed as a substitute for Maryland as a UVA crossover rival, teams play annually in football (despite being in different divisions), twice a year in basketball, and once a year in baseball. On the basketball court, both teams have an Elite 8 appearance since Louisville joined the ACC and both of these baseball programs have several College World Series appearances (with UVA claiming titles in 2015). The football team has been taking part in some great fights since the rearrangement as well, with 3 out of 4 matches decided by a single digit.

Virginia leads the men's basketball team of 10-4 while Louisville leads the 4-2 series.

    Other Rivalry

Louisville also has a Big East competitor who is busy with the University of Memphis Tigers and Marquette University, who have been on hiatus since 2014 and 2013, respectively.
