The FIFA Ballon d'Or ( French pronunciation: Ã, [bal ?? d ??] , "Golden Ball") is an annual football association award given to the world's best men's players from 2010 to 2015. Given jointly by FIFA and France Football , the prize is a merger of FIFA World Player of the Year Awards and Ballon d'Or, two of the most prestigious individual awards in the world of football. The FIFA Ballon d'Or is awarded on the basis of votes from international journalists and national team coaches and captains, who voted for players who were deemed to have done their best in the previous calendar year.
The six editions of the FIFA Ballon d'Or are dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as part of their ongoing rivalry.
Messi Barcelona won the inaugural Ballon d'Or in 2010 and then won three in a row, after his victories in 2011 and 2012. Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid, won consecutive awards in the next two years. FIFA's FIFA Ballon d'Or final is presented to Messi in 2015. His grant agency then ends their partnership; for 2016, France Football reintroduced the previous Ballon d'Or format, while FIFA created the FIFA Men's Best Player award.
