Availability
In the United States, this network is available to individuals who receive high-speed Internet connections or subscribe to cable television from an affiliated service provider. Since 2008, ESPN3 has also been available for approximately 21 million US students and US military personnel through computers with university/university (.edu) and US (.mil) IP addresses. ESPN3 is only available to Internet providers that pay fees for ESPN. ESPN3 is not brought by traditional cable and satellite providers, as it is not a single channel, but it streams multiple live events at the same time; however, ESPN includes a list of linear "ESPN3" channels (which include only one event at a time) in the television listings on its website. As part of the wide distribution agreement that DirecTV and The Walt Disney Company announced, ESPN3 has been available to DirecTV customers in early 2015. In December 2016, ESPN initiated the launch of the national ESPN Application on DirecTV setting the top box in five states. , allowing subscribers to stream thousands of live broadcasts from ESPN3 on their top DirecTV box. The national launch was completed in February 2017.
On November 1, 2010, ESPN3 was launched on Xbox Live. This service allows Xbox Live members to access live sports events on ESPN3, among other offers, at no additional cost. At launch, Xbox Live Gold membership is required to access ESPN applications; However, with June 2014 updates to Xbox Live, Gold membership is no longer required to access ESPN on Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Dish Network added ESPN3 in April 2014. In September 2016, ESPN3 was available on Sling TV's over-the-top online video service.
Criticism
Some internet service providers have complained to the FCC that ESPN3 (along with other services that use TV Everywhere systems) violates the principles of network neutrality. ESPN3 aggregates its content into participating ISP fees, regardless of whether the user is taking part in accessing their content. If a particular ISP does not pay a subscription fee to ESPN, that ISP user is not granted access to ESPN3. There is no way for individual users to overcome this access restriction because ESPN3 does not provide subscription options for individual users or other non-ISP entities, and since most ISPs operate in specific areas without competition, customers can not access ESPN3 unless the participating ISPs actually operate in the area. The only solution ESPN recommends in such situations is to ask the ISP's consumer lobby available in their area to add ESPN3.
Time Warner Cable & amp; RCN does not allow internet cable customers and the basis for accessing ESPN3; only those who subscribe to the standard or higher level of cable (and thus access the ESPN linear network) may use the service. So in this case the service charge is bundled to a cable bill and not an Internet bill.
