In March 2005, Nieto was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. After the diagnosis, he partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and created "Augie's Quest" with the sole purpose of finding a cure for ALS. The funds he collected fully for research, because the administrative costs are borne by the MDA. Since 2006, Augie Quest has raised more than $ 44 million to research the disease.
