Plot
Based on feature articles written by Sewell, Mad Hot Ballroom looks into the lives of 11-year-old New York City public school kids who travel to dance worlds and reveal pieces of themselves along the way. Told from the students 'point of view as children struggle toward the city's final competition, the film tells of students' experiences at three schools in the Tribeca, Bensonhurst and Washington Heights neighborhoods. The students are united by an interest in ballroom dancing lessons, built over a 10-week period and culminated in a competition to find schools that have produced the best dancers in town. When teachers persuade their students to learn the intricacies of different disciplines, Agrelo juxtaposes class recordings with students' reflections on life; many of these reveal the underlying maturity.
