James Rodger "J. R." House (born November 11, 1979) is a retired captain in Major League Baseball who is currently the minor general manager of Jackson General, an AA Class AA affiliate of Arizona Diamondbacks.
As a two-star sport in baseball and soccer in high school, House chose to pursue a professional baseball career after being elected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 5th round of the 1999 amateur draft.
However, he did leave baseball for a year in 2005 to try college football. He enrolled at West Virginia University and made the team a backup quarterback, but returned to professional baseball after playing frugally for Mountaineers.

A high school football player at Nitro, J.R. House set a national high school record with 10 goals passes in the 1998 West Virginia state championship game against Morgantown. He was West Virginia high school footballer of the year and also set a national record with 14,457 careers over the yard. The house is now fourth behind Maty Mauk (18.932), brother of Maty Mauk (17364) and Chris Leak (15,593). During his high school years, he spent an autumn semester playing soccer at Nitro and a spring term playing baseball at Seabreeze High School in Ormond Beach, Florida; he moved every winter with his father, who owns car dealerships in the Charleston and Daytona Beach areas.

Professional career
House started his pro career into a great start by hitting over.300 combined in the Rookie League and short-season class A in 1999. In 2000, he fought.348 with 23 homers, shared the MVP South Atlantic League with Josh Hamilton.
The house is plagued by illness and injury during its time in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He spent a month in the 2000 season due to mononucleosis. In 2001, he was twice on the defect list with a bruised rib. A year later, he underwent surgery three times - for stomach hernia, torn muscles and Tommy John's surgery. He was limited to 35 games in 2002 and 41 in 2003.
Despite spending time playing in 2003, House made its premier league debut by appearing in one of the season-ending games for Pittsburgh. After hitting.288 in 92 AAA matches in 2004, he made it back into the big league, going into five games for the Pirates.
But after the sixth season in the Pirates organization, House is no longer regarded as the top candidate by the Pittsburgh Pirates, which has great hopes for other young catchers, Ryan Doumit, Humberto Cota, Ronny Paulino and Neil Walker. In addition, his throwing ability was limited to 2004 by an injured right arm, requiring rotator cuff surgery. He was later released by the Pirates.
After his baseball career ended, House enrolled to West Virginia University, where he became the third-string quarterback for a season. In 2005, House completed 2 of 4 bait for 38 yards without touchdown or interception. He also has 2 rushes for 16 yards with a length of 13 yards and no goals.
Deciding to return to baseball in 2006, House signed a contract with Houston Astros. Awarded to their minor league team Corpus Christi Hooks Class AA, he has two throws that topped more than 15 games in the first two months of the year and on 3 June leads the Texas League in average batting.
Soon after, House moved to AAA Round Rock Express. On August 21, 2006, he played his last game with Round Rock and was called into the majors. He saw action in four games for Astros, going without a hit in nine bats.
On November 14, 2006, House was signed by the Baltimore Orioles. House played for Norfolk Tides, their AAA affiliate, for the first three months of the 2007 baseball season. House was recalled by Orioles on August 13, 2007.
The house hit his first career at home which started Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jesse Litsch on August 18, 2007. The home saw action in 19 games with Baltimore, batting.211 with three home runs. With the end of the regular season, he was beaten to the minor league on 3 October. He rejected the task and chose a free agent on October 12.
House returns to Astros 'organization next season, signing a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training on January 10, 2008. House did not make an opening day list of Astros' 2008 and on March 19, 2008 it was sent back to AAA Round Rock Express in the Pacific Coast League. He grew up by Astros on August 16 and appeared in three games, becoming hitless in three at-bats.
In 2010, House started the season with the Newark Bears of Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, playing in 16 games. On May 14, he was signed by the New York Mets. He reports to Triple A Mets affiliate, Buffalo Bisons. He played in 67 games for Bisons, batting.253 with four home runs and 29 run battled in.
On February 9, 2011, he signed a contract with Long Island Ducks.
The home runs the Hillsboro Hops to the Northwest League Championship in 2014. Home spends 2015 and 2016 seasons with Class A Advanced Visalia Rawhide, earning California League Manager of the Year in 2015.
