The Coors Field is a baseball park located in downtown Denver, Colorado. This is a field from the Colorado Rockies, Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise city. It was named for the Coors Brewing Company of Golden, Colorado, who bought the naming rights to the park before it was completed in 1995. The Rockies played their first two seasons, 1993 and 1994, at Mile High Stadium before moving to Coors Field, two blocks from Union Station in the Lower Downtown Denver neighborhood. The park includes 63 luxurious suites and 4,526 club seats.

Construction

Coors Field was the first new stadium to be added in a six-year period in which Denver sports venues improved, along with Pepsi Center and Sports Authority Field on Mile High (originally sponsored by INVESCO). It was also the first National League baseball park since the Dodger Stadium was built in 1962.

As with other new places, Coors Field is built with accessibility considerations. It is near Interstate 25 and has direct access to 20th Street and Park Avenue exits. The nearby Union Station also provides light rail and commuter train access.

Coors Field was originally planned somewhat smaller, sitting only 43,800. However, after the Rockies drew nearly 4.5 million people in their first season at Mile High Stadium - the most in baseball history - the plan was modified during construction, and a new seat on the top right-hand deck was added.

The middle ground bleach section is named "The Rockpile". During the 1993 and 1994 seasons when the team played at Mile High Stadium, which is a place of hybrid football/baseball, Rockpile is located next to the southern tribune, which is in the middle of a dead field and very far from home plate. The same design is incorporated into Coors Field, and is located in the middle of a deep to high field. The original Rockpile chairs cost a dollar each.

During construction, workers found a number of dinosaur fossils throughout the field, including a 7-foot-long (1,150-pound) triceratops skull (2,1 m). Because of this, "Jurassic Park" is one of the first names to be considered for the stadium. This then led to the selection of triceratops as Rocky's mascot, Dinger.

Coors Field is the first major league park with an underground heating system.

Features

While most of the chairs in Coors Field are dark green, the chairs in the purple upper deck of the top row to mark a mile (5280 ft. 1,609 m) altitude above sea level.

The Blue Moon Brewery at The Sandlot is a microbrewery/restaurant located behind Stand Right Field, with entrances from Coors Field, and from Blake Street. The brewery is operated by Coors Brewing Company, and experiments with small-scale beer craft. The Brewery has won many awards at the Great American Beer Festival in various categories. The popular Blue Moon, a Belgian wheat beer found here, is now mass-produced by Coors. The restaurant is housed in a building connected to the stadium. Coors Field has a wide selection of food. Options include Rockie dogs, Denver dogs, dogs and veggie burgers, and all the usual ball park items.

Behind the central field wall is a landscape decor that reflects the typical surroundings of the Rocky Mountains. This landscape area consists of waterfalls, fountains, and pine trees. After a home run or win the Rockies, the fountain shoots high into the air.

The park has two video displays of a large light-emitting diode (LED) and one ribbon view in the outfield of Daktronics. The top view, under the "Rockies" logo, measures 27 to 47 feet (8 m²-14 m). The second screen measures 33 times 73 feet (10 m² - 22 m) and is used to provide formation and statistics and as a scoreboard. This field also contains multiple Daktronics ribbons, with a length of about 833 feet (254 m).

After the close of the 2013 season, the renovation begins at the top right of the upper deck field, converted into an outdoor party deck for 2014.

Reputation as a home-friendly park

The stadium designers speculated early on that Coors Field would hand over many home runs. At 5,200 feet (1,580 m) above sea level, by far the highest park in the majors. The next highest, Chase Field in Phoenix stands at an altitude of 1,100 feet (340 m). Designers know that low air density at high altitudes will produce balls moving farther than in other parks. To compensate, the field fence is placed at great distances from the home plate, thus creating the largest outfield in Major League Baseball today, according to Business Insider. Regardless of the forced fence, for many years Coors Field not only succumbed to a home run in baseball, but because of the large, most double and triple field areas as well.

In its first decade, the average number of average home runs above average made Coors Field famous for being the most hospitable park in Major League Baseball, earning the critical nickname "Coors Canaveral" (a reference to Cape Canaveral, from where NASA launched the spacecraft) and "Williamsport" (referring to the Little League World Series website, traditionally dominated by dough). Prior to the 2002 baseball season, research determined that it was more dry air than thin air that contributed to more frequent home runs. It was found that the ball kept in the air drier was harder and therefore more elastic to the impact of bats. A humidor sized room was installed where to store the ball, and since the introduction of the number of home runs in Coors Field has declined and is now almost the same as any other park.

Regardless of the moisture of the ball, the altitude is still a factor in the game at Coors Field. The ball does not slip easier through thin air which allows for longer hits. In addition, curveballs tend to curve less with thin air than at sea level leading to fewer strikeouts and fewer effective pitches for use by pitchers.

Coors Field twice broke the main league record for home runs hit in the averages in a single season. The previous record, 248, was set at Wrigley Field's original home in Los Angeles in 1961, the only year for the major league balls. In the first year of Coors Field, the home run total fell just seven times that number, despite losing nine games from the home schedule (or 1/9 of the normal 81) due to a continuing strike from 1994. The following season, 1996, with a full timetable, 271 home run was beaten at Coors Field. In 1999, the current major league record was set at 303. The annual home run rate declined markedly in 2002, and has dropped below 200 starting in 2005.

Although the number of home runs hit per season at Coors Field declines, Coors Field still remains the best average in the Major League with a wide margin. From 2012-2015 the Rockies Colorado led the league in scoring matches at home games, while the latter in the league for the match scored in away games. This shows the extreme benefits provided by Coors Field's low air density to the bat.
