History
Baylor University's soccer teams have seen wide variations in their success over the years, including an unbeatable 3-0 perfect record in 1900.
Originally, beginning in 1898, the university played its home game in an anonymous field near the university campus. Starting in 1905, a team home game was played at Carroll Field, between the Carroll Science Building and Waco Creek. Baylor did not adopt a mascot (Baylor Bears) until December 14, 1914, after the completion of the 1914 football season. [2] In addition, Baylor did not join an athletic conference until 1914 after the end of the football season, when it became a founding member of the Southwest Conference. Baylor played his first home game against Toby's Business College (located in Waco) in 1899, the first away game on 4 November 1900, at Austin College, and his first neutral match against Texas A & M in 1901.
For the 1899 and 1900 seasons, the team was trained by R.H. Hamilton, whose 5-1-1 record is distinguished by never losing record; in 1899, Baylor played, and lost, his first match against Texas A & amp; M, which will be a rivalry (until 2012 when Texas A & M change conference), Brazos Battle, with over 100 games played in series by 2003. WJ Ritchie coached the 1901 team, leading it to a 5-3 record; in this year, the first games of the Baylor-Texas and Baylor-TCU series were played. Texas Christian University (known as AddRan Male & Female College until 1902) was located in Waco from 1895 to 1910 and was one of Baylor's greatest football contenders until the dissolution of the Southwest Conference in 1995. The 1901 season also welcomed the first Baylor Thanksgiving ball, with a 28-0 victory over St. University Edward. J.C. Ewing took over the team in 1902, and led him into a losing first season, with a 3-4-2 record. R.N. Watts restored the tradition of Baylor's victory in 1903, with a 4-3-1 record.
No team was demoted in 1906 after a ban against football violence; along with 1943 and 1944 (during World War II), 1906 was one of three seasons since 1899 that Baylor had not competed in university soccer. Luther Burleson led the restored football team in 1907, and managed a 4-3-1 record. E.J. Mills led the team for the 1908 and 1909 seasons; 3-5-0 and 5-3-0 notes were notorious for losing 1908 to LSU, and for the world's first "Homecoming" in the 1909 Thanksgiving Day match, which included concerts, parades, and bonfires. To date, Baylor claims the honor of having the largest homecoming march in the world.
Baylor has many traditions such as the Baylor-TCU competition which is one of the most played in all college football, the Brazos Battle (through 2011 when Texas A & M left Big 12), membership in the historic Southwest Conference, live Mascot Bear since 1915 and Baylor Line.
In 1966, John Hill Westbrook of Elgin, Texas became the first African American to play university football at the Southwest Conference when he joined the Baylor team.
Early Success SWC and Bowl Success
Baylor won the SWC Championship in 1915, 1916, 1922 and again in 1924. In 1956 Baylor approached the SWC title again but finished second and was sent to face the unbeaten Tennessee # 2 volunteers in 1957 Sugar Bowl. Baylor beat Johnny Majors and # 2 Volunteers 13-7. This is the highest ranking opponent Baylor ever hunted to beat the # 1 Kansas State rankings in 2012. The 1924 SWC Championship will be the last for decades until Baylor won another conference in 1974 under the leadership of third-year head coach Grant Teaff. From the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, Baylor also played in 1952 the Orange Bowl (vs. Georgia Tech), twice at Gator Bowl (vs. Auburn and Florida), and Bluebonnet (beat LSU), Dixie (defeating Wake Forest ) and Gotham Bowl (beating the # 10 ranking of Utah St. in New York City).
Miracle on the Brazos
Baylor has finished in last place in 4 of the last 7 seasons including the previous year and has not won a conference championship in 50 years. Also, before this season, they never showed up at the Cotton Bowl. Next, coming into season 1974 Baylor has lost 16 consecutive games to the Texas Longhorns. The 1974 Texas vs Baylor game looked like another easy victory for Texas because the Longhorns took over the game quickly and went into the first round 24-7 lead. Baylor excited from the second half but, triggered by a blocked kick at the start of the 3rd quarter. The Bears rise to a thrilling 34-24 victory over the Longhorns. Baylor went on to win the conference title that year and his first trip to the Cotton Bowl (the first time in seven seasons that Texas did not win the Southwest Conference title). The whole season of Baylor football 1974 was dubbed the "Miracle in Brazos" by many sports writers at the time. Victory over Texas and the SWC championship have become a special part of Baylor's athletic history.
Grant Teaff Era
One of the most successful coaches in Baylor football history is Grant Teaff. He led the Bears to Conference Title in 1974, his third year in the program, and again in 1980 when he led the Bears to the Cotton Bowl to face Alabama Crimson Tide. Grant Teaff recruited famous players like Mike Singletary, Thomas Everett, Walter Abercrombie and James Francis to play football at Baylor University. The coach Teaff also named the National Coach of the Year after the 1974 season. He will continue serving until 1992 leading Baylor to eight bowl matches and two Championship Conferences (1974, 1980) in 21 years as head coach.
The Great 12 Era
In 1996 Baylor joined Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A & amp; M, along with the Big 8 conference schools, to form the Big 12 Conference. Baylor's first decade in the conference was unsuccessful, but Art Briles was hired as head coach before the 2008 season and changed the team. During the 2013 football season, Baylor will claim his first 12 Great Championships after winning over Texas Longhorns in regular season games and the last game played at Floyd Casey Stadium. Baylor ended the year with a record 11-1 (8-1 in the conference) and bid on the (BCS) Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. The Bears also completed the 2013 season which ranked No. 1. 1 in the country in total violations with an average of 618 yards per game. Baylor's average of 52.4 points per game is tied to the 1995 Nebraska team for all three times in NCAA history. For the 2014 season, the Bears performed the same way. They won their second major Big Two Championship when they beat Kansas State in the last regular season game. After weeks of heated debate, Baylor was abandoned at the first Football College playoff and was given the chance to play at the Cotton Bowl, one of the New Year's Six Bowls.
In December 2016, Matt Rhule was hired as Head Coach.
Bricks Art Era (2008-2015)
season 2010
The 2010 season was a breakthrough for Baylor Bears. Baylor got an invitation to the Texas Bowl in Houston after completing the regular season with a 7-5 record, this was their first bowl appearance since 1995. In the regular season the Bears victory included a Big 12 conference win over Kansas and Kansas St, as well as a winning road over Colorado and Texas.
2011 season
Built on the success of the 2010 team, Baylor started the season at home with an upset # 14 TCU, winner of the previous season, Rose Bowl. The Bears also won the next two games before traveling to Kansas State where they lost in a game contested by a single point. Baylor then defeated Iowa State 49-26 for the win of the first conference of the year before ending October with a two-straight loss on the road, to A & amp; M and the eventual eventual # 3 Oklahoma State winner.
The Bears rebounded to finish the regular season, with five straight wins including a Homecoming victory over Missouri, a 31-30 overtime victory in Kansas where Baylor tied the school record by overcoming a 21-point deficit in the 4th quarter, and the first program won over # 5 Oklahoma on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Griffin to Terrance Williams with 8 seconds left in the game. Baylor ends November in Dallas playing against Texas Tech at Cowboys Stadium; although Griffin left the game due to a concussion in the half, Nick Florence's reserves entered the game and led the Bear to a 66-42 victory.
The Bears finished the regular season at home with a 48-24 win over # 22 Texas which drove the team (9-3, 6-3 Big XII) to the Alamo Bowl with rank # 12 and # 15 BCS and AP respectively, and pushed Griffin to the top of the Heisman Trophy; he became the first Baylor-winning player and Baylor's first player since Don Trull in 1963 became a significant factor in the vote.
At Alamo Bowl, Bear faces Washington Huskies in what became the second highest-scoring bowl game in history, and the game's highest-scoring game game ever. Baylor climbed 21-7 at the start of the match, with Griffin throwing for one goal and rushing for the other. The Huskies returned with 28 unanswered points, and the team finished half with Washington leading 35-24. In the second half, with defenses showing limited ability to overcome high-power violations led by Griffin and Husky QB Keith Price, the teams traded scores. The Bears overcame a halftime deficit, leading 60-56 in the fourth quarter, and Baylor RB Terrance Ganaway made the last 43-yard touchdown. Ganaway finished with 21 carry for 200 yards and 5 TDs and was recognized as an offensive MVP game.
season 2012
Baylor's post-RG3 era opened in Waco against Mustangs High. Quarterback Nick Florence - now a senior, has burned his redshirt season to play the second half against Texas Tech in 2011 after Griffin III left with a concussion - leading the Bears to 59-24. Two weeks later, a home win against # 2 FCS Sam Houston State gave Baylor fans their first glimpse of things to come when the Oregon transfer goes back Lache Seastrunk, who entered the game in the 4th quarter, placing Baylor ahead 41-23 with a 15-yard touchdown in a hurry. Baylor then traveled to Louisiana-Monroe to face the Warhawk team who had scored a stunning victory over # 8 Arkansas and then took Auburn for overtime. The 47-42 victory Baylor represented the 9th consecutive Bears win (at the time, the longest 2nd streak on FBS) and ranked the Bears # 24.
The winning streak was broken off during Baylor's first trip to Morgantown, West Virginia, by a Mountaineer # 7 ranking team that played their inaugural Big 12 game game. The 70-63 shootout saw some 12 major set of notes, mainly including a single game recipient record by Baylor recipient Terrance Williams (314 meters). Losses dropped Baylor from the rankings and represented the start of a 4-wobble skid during which time Baylor lost in Waco to TCU, at # 25 Texas, and at Iowa State. Victory at home against Kansas and losses at # 12 Oklahoma left the Bear struggling for the feasibility of the bowl.
Baylor shocked college football world next week by beating Kansas State # 1 in Waco 52-24. The touch of Florence's 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter gave Baylor a 14-7 advantage that was never released. Baylor's defense highlighted the match with a stadium strapping in the fourth quarter and held Heisman Collin Klein three times, the latter on the endzone to prepare an 80-yard touchdown run by Lache Seastrunk. The victory over Kansas State represented the program's first win of the team ranking # 1 and sparked a 3-game winning streak for Baylor (with 52-45 overtime win over Texas Tech at the Cowboys Stadium and a 41-34 victory in Waco over # 23 Oklahoma State). During the game OSU Seastrunk again won recognition for a 76-yard touchdown rush, beating the secondary Oklahoma State despite suffering from quadriceps cramps near midfield.
The conclusion of Baylor's 7-5 2012 campaign marks the first time since 1949-51 that the Bears have enjoyed three successive seasons with 7 wins. On December 2, Baylor took his place at the Holiday Bowl, sending Bear to the third bowl in a row for the first time in program history. Baylor easily beat the UCLA Bruins # 17 ranking at the Holiday Bowl on December 27, 2012 with a final margin of 49-26 after jumping to a 21-0 advantage early in the 2nd quarter. Lache Seastrunk (RB) and Chris McAllister (DE) are named Offensive Player and Defensive Player from each game. Coach Art Briles has led the Bears to a 11-1 record in November and December for the past 2 seasons which includes 2 bowl victories.
2013 season
In 2013, Baylor can be spelled out as the best regular season in school history. A 9-0 best start pushed the Bears to No. 1 ranking. 3 in Poll AP. However, after losing on-the-road to Oklahoma State, the Bears needed a win in their last two games and lost Oklahoma State to have a chance to clinch the title of Big 12 straight away. With the defeat of the Cowboys, Baylor's season-closing match against Texas - the last game at Floyd Casey Stadium - became the Big 12 de facto championship game. Baylor defeated Longhorns, 30-10, to record his 11th straight school win and first conference title since 1980. it also ensures the team feeds the Fiesta Bowl, the first ever BCS bowl appearance and their first main bowl in 33 years. Baylor was defeated at the Fiesta Bowl by University of Central Florida 52-42. Bryce Petty, the Bears quarterback, finished seventh in the 2013-14 Heisman race in New York, the second Heisman Trophy candidate set by Baylor in the last three record-breaking seasons. Petty was selected as the 12th Offensive Offensive of the Year after this season.
season 2016
Jim Grobe took over as temporary head coach for Baylor and led them to their 7th straight bowl appearance and 31-12 victory over the highly favored Boise State (10-2 record). Baylor ended the season with a 7-6 record.
News Updates â ⬠<â â¬
The Big 12 Conference conditionally held $ 6 million of Baylor's yearly payments until Baylor could declare the changes had been implemented. In March 2017, the Texas Ranger Division confirmed that it had initiated a "preliminary investigation" as to whether the university or Waco PD had violated any law. On March 7, 2017, US District Judge Robert L. Pitman dismissed several claims made in the lawsuit against the university while allowing others to proceed.
Matt Rhule era (2017-present)
In December 2016 former Temple coach, Matt Rhule, was hired as Baylor's chief coach and given a 7-year contract. Rhule then replaces all previous football coaches and support staff and completed the recruitment process in February 2017.

Facilities
Stadium
Baylor Bears have played their home game at Floyd Casey Stadium, originally known as Baylor Stadium, since the facility opened in 1950 until the close of 2013. Construction begins at what will be Floyd Casey Stadium just after World War II in 1948. The cost of the stadium $ 1.8 Million to build and placed on land donated by local Baylor landowners. Opened under Baylor Stadium in 1950 with a game against Houston, won by Baylor 34-7. When it finishes the new stadium is the second largest football stadium in the state of Texas. Floyd Casey Stadium has a seating capacity of 50,000 and has undergone several renovations over the course of its lifetime, most recently in 2009.
Prior to the Bears at Floyd Casey Stadium, the Bears played at Municipal Stadium (1936-1949), Cotton Palace (1926-1929), on campus at Carroll Field (1906-1925 and 1930-1935). In the 2012 season, Carroll Field has become the only field on campus for the Bear.
In the fall of 2012, Baylor University begins construction of a new $ 266 million stadium on the northern bank of the Brazos River, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 football season with the first game scheduled for 31 August 2014 against former Southwest Conferenceist University Methodist (SMU). The new McLane stadium is named after Drayton McLane, Jr. who donated large sums of money for the construction of the stadium. McLane Stadium is the largest construction project in Waco and Central Texas history, and is projected to bring increased revenue to downtown Waco. Although McLane Stadium has a smaller capacity than its predecessor, Floyd Casey Stadium, can be expanded to 55,000 seats.
Simpson Athletics and Academic Center
The Simpson Center was built in 2009 and provides 97,000 feet of facilities for home football operations. The building also has a football weight room of 13,500 feet. The building is built in a classical campus style that matches the southern red brick architectural style of the Baylor University campus and more than three floors. It houses the main athletic training room, football team football room, equipment room, coach locker room, and main weight chamber. The Simpson Center also provides academic support rooms for study and academic work. Equipment for sports and athletic rehabilitation includes a new state of the art underwater treadmill built at Simpson Center.
Indoor Jay and Jenny Allison's Football Practice Facility
In-room training facilities are a full football field and A/C that allows Baylor sports to practice in all weather conditions throughout the year. Indoor facilities are a gift from the old Baylor newspaper and successful entrepreneur Jay Allison along with his wife Jenny. The new indoor art courts are designed to be part of the Highers Athletic Complex and backs onto the Brazos river. The building was built in 2010 with an estimated cost of $ 15.4 million.

Current competition
TCU
Baylor's competition with TCU is one of the most played on all campus football. Dating back to the 1899 series began while TCU was in Waco, Texas as a cross-town rival to Baylor. Because of the close of two 23 school matches played between 1899 and 1910. The fire in 1910 destroyed the Main House on the TCU campus and financial incentives from the city of Fort Worth convinced the Supervisory Board to relocate TCU to the city.. There was a ten-year break in the series when the dissolution of the Southwest Conference in 1996 resulted in two universities joining a separate athletic conference. The series is back in Waco for the 2006 Baylor House opener and resumed in 2007 in Fort Worth. The annual series resumed in 2010, and with TCU being added as a new member of the 12 Big Conference in 2012, this series has become one of the greatest rivalries in all campus football again.
Texas Tech
Baylor Bears is Texas Tech's most popular opponent with 76 meetings between teams dating back to 1929. Since 2009, the Bears have played Red Raiders at AT & amp; T Stadium, Saturday after Thanksgiving (with the exception of the 2010 game that plays in the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair of Texas).
Texas
Bear has played University of Texas in Austin more than 100 times. Both schools are founding members of the Southwest Conference and the 12 Big Conference. They are also located very close to about 100 miles separating the schools. Texas had dominated the whole series but Baylor found much success versus Longhorns under Coach Grant Teaff's leadership from the mid-1970s until Teaff's retirement in 1992. From 1974 to 1992 Baylor won 10 games against Texas while Longhorns won another 9 games. Some of the more memorable games in this series so far include the victory of Baylor's 'Miracle on the Brazos' in 1974, 'Worm Game' in 1978, Baylor's 16-0 shutout of Texas in 1980 to end the unbeaten conference Championship, and Teaff's last regular victory of the season in 1992. In 2013, Baylor beat Longhorns in Waco in the de facto Big 12 Championship game, 30-10
SMU
Southern Methodist University Mustangs had been a great rival of the Bears who had played many times since 1916. Both teams were rivals in the old Southwest Conference. The program is very competitive to recruit the Dallas area during the SWC era and is separated by approximately 90 minutes of driving time. Baylor and SMU will meet for the next 3 years starting with the 2014 football season.
Recorded all the time versus the current Big 12 team
Competition is off
Arkansas
The University of Arkansas football team Razorbacks once became one of Baylor's oldest rivals when the series originated in 1904. Both teams are equally a footballing power in the old Southwest Conference. The program is very competitive to recruit East Texas during the SWC era and play many football matches that are close and contested while playing for almost 90 years as the enemy of the conference.
Houston
The University of Houston Cougars football team used to be a Southwest Conference competitor of the Bears, with the team playing 28 times. Baylor and Houston are the football rivals at the Southwest Conference. The program competes to recruit the Houston area during the SWC era because the two schools are separated for about 3 hours. The first match between the two teams took place in 1950 and was Baylor's victory. The series took a hiatus after the SWC outbreak in 1996. The game of the future has not yet been scheduled.
Rice
University Owls Rice football team is the current and old rival of the Bears, with the team having played 80 times. Baylor and Rice are rivals of football at the old Southwest Conference. The program competes to recruit the Houston area during the SWC era because the two schools are separated for about 3 hours. The series took hiatus 11 years after the outbreak of SWC in 1996 but the last match has taken place in Waco in 2007, in Houston in 2010, and again in Waco in 2011; with all three games becoming a victory for Baylor.
Texas A & amp; M
Texas A & amp; M is one of Baylor's oldest rivals as the date series from 1899 and the two schools lie just 90 miles apart on the Brazos River. The highlight of the competition from the series was from 1960-1990 when Baylor won 13 matches, A & amp; M won 16 matches and 2 games ended with a bond. During that time 18 of the games were decided by 7 points or less. The games played in 2011 are likely to be the end of the series for the future to come because of A & amp; M to leave Big 12 Conference.
Tradition
Baylor Line Baylor Line is one of the first aspects of Baylor's spirit that new students are introducing. The Baylor Line is made entirely of new students and is at the core of Baylor's spirit and tradition. The students wore gold ball t-shirts with the number of graduation years they expected and the nickname chosen on the back.
Before every football game, Baylor Line gathered at one end of McLane Stadium and waited for a signal to create a 'crazy dash' under the field to create a giant human tunnel through which the football team went into the stadium. Six members of Baylor Line carry flags with letters B-A-Y-L-O-R while the rest of the Line runs behind them. After that, the students rush to the sidelines and stand on the exclusive Baylor Line section behind the opposing bench where the students watch the game, entertaining Bear for another victory, and confront the opposing team.
Baylor Line was held in 1970 and was a fully male organization until 1993, when women were allowed to join. In the beginning Baylor Line was a group of new students lined up in front of Baylor students section with the aim of protecting Baylor women from another team of more violent fans.
The color of the jersey of the Line originally played between green in odd years and gold in an even-numbered year until 1998 (class of 2002). It turns green every year until around 2001, when to have a more substantial student section, decisions are taken to use gold every year. The green jerseys are now used for Baylor University Chamber of Commerce members who lead the Baylor Track in singing; This shirt has a "CC" on the back, not the year of graduation.
Mascots
Baylor keeps two American black bears, Joy and Lady, on campus in their natural habitat enclosure as a mascot for the University. The American black bear explored the majority of Texas in abundance when Baylor was founded in 1845, and the bear was still to be found in many areas of the country until the 1940s. The university has had a live bear since 1915. The first teddy bear was a gift from Herbert Mayr, a local businessman who won a bear in a poker game from a member of the troops of Engineers 107, who was a unit of the 32nd Infantry. The division was stationed at Camp MacArthur in Waco. The soldiers were stationed in the city during World War I. The bears were taken to the stadium by the spirit group Baylor Chamber on match days and they attended a pre-match event and remained a symbol of University's life in the match. However, since 2010, bears are no longer allowed in football games or other campus events on leashes. The USDA informed Baylor officials that they would no longer be allowed to bring the bears to the game according to Federal Regulation 2.131 (c) (1) stating "During public exhibitions, any animal must be handled so that the risk of damage is minimal, to the public, with sufficient distance and/or barrier between animals and the general public to ensure the safety of animals and communities. "
Alma mater
Before kickoff and after every game, Baylor fans sang the alma mater's 'That Good Old Baylor Line' while holding their "Bear Claws" in the air. The song is set to the 1949 classic "In Good Old Summertime."

Logo and uniform
The traditional Baylor uniforms worn for home games consist of a golden helmet with a green BU logo on the sides and a green & amp; white stripes in the middle, green shirts, and white or gold pants; the white jersey is replaced with the green one for the road game. In recent seasons, matte green helmets and white helmets have been used as an alternative to gold helmets. Black shirts and black or green pants have also been used to provide some uniform combination of Bears to choose from.
On August 11, 2014, Baylor Bears won an online fan voting for the best football jersey given by Sporting News Magazine.
