In fashion, balerina neckline refers to the classical neckline styles in dance outfits, or tight clothes, worn by dancers.
Popularized primarily by designers and fashion icons in the mid-twentieth century, the term balerina (or ballet) neckline can be interpreted in various ways. Some classic or traditional style shirts have a low, wide, vertically wrapped neck and others are cut in a high horizontal oval shape. Both styles can be accompanied by a very low reopening.
Most often, the balerina neckline is a relatively high horizontal oval shape intended to frame the clavicle. This particular oval shape distinguishes the ballerina (or "ballet") neckline from the neckline of the crew, the rounded neck. A similar neck style would be a bateau neckline (also known as a boat neck) and a spoon neck cut.
Currently, in the early 21st century, neck styles in adult women's shirts and children's shirts include various variations on the classic neckline, including the front V-neck, front and back V-neck, or lover's neckline with or without ruching in breast.
