Miller was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She attends Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School (VASJ) where he is a two-star sport between basketball and soccer. Miller was the starting point keeper for all four seasons in basketball and led them to the state championship as a senior in 1991-92. In football, he became an early quarterback in his sophomore season, replacing the future of the National Football League quarterback, Elvis Grbac. Miller led the football squad to the state championship as a junior, a feat that Grbac did not even accomplish. He was not much recruited from the college basketball team because he was expected to play football in the next level instead, but head coach Marquette Kevin O'Neill was persistent in his recruitment, and eventually Miller signed a contract for the Warriors.

His total assists finished seventh the entire time in Division I history, and occupied fifth position all the time when he graduated. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Miller is the catalyst for the back-to-back Marquette NCAA Tournament; in the 1994 tournament, he was the main reason why Marquette was able to solve the full court press of Kentucky when the Warriors disappointed the Wildcats to progress to Sweet 16. As a senior, Marquette became runner-up in the National Invitation Tournament of 1995. Miller was a three-time Midwest Team selection for the Great Conference from 1993 to 1995.
