Anthony Joseph "Tony" Gaffney, Jr. (born November 14, 1984) is a professional American basketball player for Hapoel Tel Aviv from the Israeli Premier League. He played college basketball at the University of Massachusetts. During the 2008-09 season, he received numerous awards from the 10 Atlantic Conference including Year-End Defensive Players, All-Defensive Teams, and the Second Team all conferences.

Early life and high school
Gaffney was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 14, 1984, and grew up in Berkley, Massachusetts. He played four-year basketball at high school at Somerset High School in Somerset, Massachusetts. In 2002, Gaffney helped turn the 2-20 Raiders team into a 21-4 Massachusetts Division 2 South Sectional Champions. That season Gaffney averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 11 game blocks. He is rewarded for playing strongly in his senior season with the title of the Most Valuable Athletic Athletic Conferences, All State honors, and Massachusetts Rivals Players of the Year. After his senior season, Gaffney played a preparatory season at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts. He averaged 13 points with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks.

Higher Education
In the new season 2004-05, Gaffney played in all 29 matches for Boston University. He averaged 15.6 minutes, 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1 assists and 0.8 game blocks. During the 2005-06 season, Gaffney averaged 17 minutes of matches, 4.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.5 blocks. After the season, Gaffney was transferred to the University of Massachusetts. The NCAA transfer rules forced him to sit in the 2006-07 season. He returned in 2007-08 to play thirty-three games with eight starts, while averaging 20 minutes, 3.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 game blocks.
In thirty games in his senior season in 2008-09, Gaffney averaged 33.9 minutes, 11.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2 steals, and 3.8 blocks; His 3.8 block games gave him the third place in the country. He is also the first person since Shelden Williams has more than 100 blocks and 50 steals in a single season. Gaffney's defensive battle earned him 10 Atlantic Defensive Player of the Year awards, a place in the All-Defensive Team A-10, and a place in the A-10 Second Team.
Professional career
Gaffney trained at IMG Basketball Academy with coach David Thorpe for the 2009 NBA Draft. After not being grafted, Gaffney joined the Los Angeles Lakers team in Las Vegas Summer League 2009. Thanks to his powerful game in Las Vegas, Gaffney was invited to the 2009-10 Lakers training camp. He is the last player freed (on 25 October 2009) to reach the opening day list.
Gaffney then played for Hapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon's club in Israel, but, after injuring his leg, returned to the United States for treatment.
On April 13, 2010, Gaffney signed with the Boston Celtics for the rest of the regular season and playoffs, and unsecured contracts for the 2010-11 season. Gaffney was released on October 1, 2010.
In October 2010, he signed a contract with TÃÆ'ürk Telekom B.K. in Turkey, but left the team two months later.
On January 5, 2011, Gaffney was signed by Flash Utah of the NBDL. Flash officials say they expect him to contribute soon, and, despite signing on the All-star break, he earns 11.5 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game in the NBDL All-Defensive First Team and honors the All-League.
In July 2011, Gaffney was signed by Telekom Baskets Bonn, BBL Germany, playing in the All Star league in mid-season Baskets, then ending the regular season as the only player in the top ten league in the first block and stealing (5) 13 points and 6 rebounds. Gaffney is named All League by the website Eurobasket.com and First Team All Defense League Team as well.
In July 2012 he was signed by Spanish club Joventut Badalona, ââthe team he left on 14 March when, after a lengthy period of non-settlement, the team failed the contract due to financial problems. At the end of the season, Gaffney are in the top 7 in the ACB league in rebounds (5.91), efficiency (15.3), and in the top 4 in both shots are blocked and stealing while averaging 11.5 ppg, the only player in the league in the top 10 in each category. Gaffney is named in the Top 6 weekly four times and once MVP.
In September 2013, Gaffney signed a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. However, he was released on October 26, the last player to be released before the regular season.
Gaffney returned to Germany to play for Telekom Baskets Bonn, where his all-around game was rewarded when he was selected by fans as a starter in the German BBL All-Star 2013-2014 game, and was named for First Team All Defense by the Eurobasket website.com. Leading Bonn in minutes and calling the defense off the floor, Gaffney ended the season with an average of 12 points, 6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game as Bonn was eliminated in the playoffs by Oldenburg.
In September 2014, Gaffney signed a two-year contract (with a team option for the second year) to play with Hapoel Jerusalem B.C., who won the 2014-15 Championship for the first time in league history. With the limitations of the league as a foreign player on the floor simultaneously, Gaffney was awarded the Israeli Super Six League of the Year and was the finalist of the Israeli Defense Super League Player of the Year. During the 2015-16 season in which Jerusalem lost in the Championship Final, Gaffney averaged 10 ppg and 6 rpg and led the league in a 2 point percentage while shooting 33% of 3. As a starter, he again became a finalist for Super Israel's Best Defense League Player This year.
On September 12, 2016, Gaffney signed with Alba Berlin for the 2016-17 season.
On July 26, 2017, Gaffney signed with Japanese club B.League Chiba Jets Funabashi for the 2017-18 season. However, on November 25, 2017, Gaffney parted ways with Chiba Jets Funabashi and signed with Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv for the remainder of the season, joining former head coach Danny Franco and teammates Tywain McKee and Rafi Menco. On December 2, 2017, Gaffney made his debut in a 95-86 win over Maccabi Rishon LeZion, scoring 23 points, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks from the bench. Three days later, Gaffney was given the League of Israel Round 8 MVP. On February 19, 2018, Gaffney was selected as the starter for Israel's All-Star Game 2018.
