Histori
Arena opened in 2002 in part of the former Pitt Stadium location, which housed the university football team from 1925-1999. Pitt's son and daughter basketball program made their home here, previously at the Fitzgerald Field House. The new building, due to its larger capacity, also means that Pitt no longer has to play a particular game or hold a graduation ceremony at the Civic Arena.
The first event was the Counting Crows concert. For the concert, 9,000 seat seats for the final stage show, 14,763 for the show on center stage. The first official women's basketball game at Pete was a 90-51 victory over Robert Morris University on November 22, 2002. The first official man's basketball game at Pete was a 82-67 win over Duquesne University on November 23, 2002. Since then the creation until the end of the 2012- 13, Pitt's basketball team has collected a record of 180-22 (0.891) at Pete, including a 9-1 record against teams that are in the top five. Pitt broke the 100th winning mark on 22 November 2008 with a 86-60 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a 200th winning mark on 30 December 2014 vs. Florida Gulf Coast.
In 2006, Pittsburgh Xplosion, a professional basketball team at the Continental Basketball Association, played its first match in the arena. The team folded just before the start of the 2008-09 season.
In October 2011, a new high definition video board was installed at the Petersen Events Center.
Since 2010 the Petersen Event Center has been used as a major alternative to the much larger PPG Paints Arena, which replaced the Mellon Arena, and is now home to Pittsburgh Disney on Ice, and hosted Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus in recent years.

Facilities
With a total of 430,000 square feet, Pete has 12,508 for basketball and 9,000 for the final stage concert. It has a 16,000 square foot (1,500 m 2 ) 90-foot (27 m) and 42,000 square foot (3,900 m 2 ) ceiling-level lobby of glass with a barely visible layer that allows sunlight to penetrate while controlling heat loss and gain. The video scoreboard previously depended on Pitt Stadium is also installed in the lobby. The Arena also features 18 luxury suites, including five luxury suites on the edge of the field (the only college arena with a suite on the edge of the field) and the 193-seat SuperSuite.
Student parts and awards
The section known as the Oakland Zoo consists of sections across from the team bench and next to the court. The name came from Oakland, the neighborhood where Pitt's campus is located. Students at the Zoo wear gold shirts with the words "Oakland Zoo" in some way, shape or shape on the front. This layout and unity is a big factor why Pete is a difficult place to play for the opposing team. In fact, Pitt has lost just five non-conference matches at home from over 120 since the Panthers moved to Pete in 2002.
In 2006, Sports Illustrated examined Big East Conference basketball players, and Pete was named "The Hardest Place to Play," with specific players mentioning the Oakland Zoo and the creativity of the fans. In 2013, this facility is also classified as having the second best game time environment in the country by USA Today .
The Petersen Event Center has also received the award for the sixth most congested college basketball venue according to ESPN the Magazine, the eight best college basketball balls by ESPN Jason King, and one of the toughest places for opponents to play in basketball college according to some articles of Bleach Report. Pitt's men's basketball team has also sold season tickets since the venue opened.
In 2007 and 2010, "The Pete" hosted the first and second games of the NCAA Women's Division I Tournament.
Other uses
The Petersen Events Center serves more than just the home field of the Panthers basketball team.
