North Star Conference or NSC is a women's conference at the NCAA. The conference dates from the school year 1983-84 to the academic year 1991-1992. Originally announced in 1983, the conference was formed by members of the Butler Charter, Dayton, DePaul, Detroit, Evansville, Loyola (Chicago), Notre Dame, and Xavier. Although the conference was to offer competition across countries, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball, the conference was made primarily as a basketball conference. With the exception of Butler and Dayton, all the charter women's basketball teams have competed at the NCAA Division I level; Butler and Dayton upgraded their teams from the NCAA Division II and started the competition in the second season of the conference. The conference was effectively absorbed by the Mid-Continent Conference (now known as The Summit League), as six of its last seven members transferred their women's sport to the organization (the remaining members, Akron, transferred all of their sports for both sexes to the Mid- America).
