New York City Ballet ( NYCB ) is a ballet company founded in 1948 by choreographers George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Balanchine and Jerome Robbins are considered choreographers of the company's founders. LÃÆ' Â © on Barzin is the company's first music director. City Ballet grew from previous groups: American Ballet School Producer Company, 1934; American Ballet, 1935, and Caravan Ballet, 1936, which joined the American Ballet Caravan, 1941; and directly from the Ballet Society, 1946.

In a 1946 letter, Kirstein stated, "The only justification I have is to allow Balanchine to do exactly what he wants to do the way he wants." He served as General Director of the company from 1946 to 1989, developing and maintaining it with organizational and fundraising capabilities.
The company was named New York City Ballet in 1948 when it became a resident in the Town Center for Music and Drama. His success was marked by his move to the New York State Theater, now David H. Koch Theater, designed by Philip Johnson for the Balanchine specification. City Ballet went on to become the first ballet company in the United States to have two permanent places: one at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater on 63rd Street in Manhattan, and another at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in Saratoga Springs, New York. The School of American Ballet (S.A.B.), founded by Balanchine, is a City Ballet training school.
After the company moved to the State Theater, Balanchine's creativity as a choreographer flourished. He created the works that became the basis of corporate treasury until his death in 1983. His visions affect dance well throughout the United States and in Europe. He worked closely with choreographer Jerome Robbins, who continued his relationship with the company in 1969 after producing work for Broadway.
NYCB still has the largest repertoire far from American ballet companies. It often features 60 ballets or more in winter and spring at the Lincoln Center every year, and 20 or more in the summer in Saratoga Springs. City Ballet has featured The Nutcracker , Romeo and Juliet , Summer Night Dreams , and more. City Ballet has trained and developed many great dancers since its formation. Many dancers with an already growing reputation have also joined ballet as main dancers.

In 1960, Balanchine installed City Ballet Salute to Italy with the premiere of Monumentum pro Gesualdo and Variations from Don Sebastian (called Donizetti Variations since 1961), as well as his appearance La Sonnambula and Lew Christensen Con Amore . The show was repeated in 1968.
Stravinsky Festival
In 1972 Balanchine offered an eight-day award to the composer, his great collaborator, who had died the previous year. His programs include twenty-two new works from his own dance, plus works by choreographer Todd Bolender, John Clifford, Lorca Massine, Jerome Robbins, Richard Tanner and John Taras, as well as ballads by Balanchine and Robbins. Balanchine created the Symphony in Three Movements , Duo Concertant , and Violin Concerto for this event. She and Robbins joined the choreographer and performed at Pulcinella. Balanchine had produced the previous Stravinsky festival in 1937 as a balletmaster of American Ballet when invited by Metropolitan Opera. The composer premiered April 27 Card Party .
Ravel Festival
In 1975 Balanchine paid tribute to French composer Maurice Ravel with two weeks Hommage ÃÆ' Ravel . Balanchine, Robbins, Jacques d'Amboise, and Taras make sixteen new ballets for this event. Repertoire ballads are also performed. High points include Balanchine Tschaikovsky Festival
In 1981 Balanchine planned a two-week NYCB festival to honor Russian composer Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky. Balanchine, Joseph Duell, d'Amboise, Peter Martins, Robbins, and Taras created twelve new dances. In addition to presenting this ballet and astrology, Balanchine re-choreographed Mozartiana from 1933. Philip Johnson and John Burgee stage settings from translucent tubing are designed to be hung and lit in various architectural configurations throughout the festival..
Centennial Stravinsky Celebration
In 1982 Balanchine held a hundred-year celebration in honor of his longtime collaborator Igor Stravinsky, in which City Ballet performed twenty-five ballets accompanied by the composer's music. Balanchine created three new ballet, Tango , ÃÆ' â € ° lÃÆ' Â © gie , and Persephone , and the new version Variation . The choreographer died the following year. The Balanchine 50th Anniversary Celebration was held by the company in 2002.
20 Years Celebration Theater New York
On April 26, 1984, NYCB celebrated the 20th anniversary of the New York State Theater. The program starts with Igor Stravinsky Fanfare for New Theater, followed by Stravinsky's arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner. Ballet includes three works by Balanchine, Serenade, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, and Sonatine ; and Jerome Robbins' Afternoon of a Faun. The players include Maria Calegari, Kyra Nichols, Heather Watts, Leonid Kozlov, Afshin Mofid, Patricia McBride, Helgi Tomasson, Karin von Aroldingen, Lourdes Lopez, Bart Cook, and Joseph Duell.
Peter Martins
After Balanchine's death in 1983, Peter Martins was chosen as the company's balletmaster. After 30 years, Martins is considered to have retained the financial security of the New York City Ballet and the level of musicality and appearance of the dancers, but he has not emphasized the Balanchine style as many observers had expected. Martins retired from his position in 2018.
American Music Festival
For the company's 40th anniversary, Martins held an American Music Festival, after commissioning dances from Laura Dean choreographer Eliot Feld, William Forsythe, Lar Lubovitch, and Paul Taylor. He also presents ballet by George Balanchine and Robbins. Its programs include a world premiere of over twenty dances. Martins contribute Barber Violin Concerto , Black and White , The Chairman Dances , Stupid for you , Fred and George , Advanced Women , Tanzspiel , Tea-Rose , and The Waltz Project .

Programming
NYCB did the fall, winter and spring treasures at David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center as well as George Balanchine's Nutcracker during November and December; they have a summer residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and regularly tour internationally.
The introductory talk about the current performance, called the First Position Discussion, was held before several performances or during some interval in the fourth ring, the right home; the registrant is a volunteer and includes a layman as well as a former dancer. Events at NYCB for an hour explore the history and workings of New York City Ballet through appearances and discussions, often with dancers and artistic staff.
Other public programs include Family Saturdays, a one-hour interactive program for children aged 5 and above; Children's Workshops and Motion Workshops, pre-explorations of musical performances, movements, and ballet themes are featured in the matinee for children ages 5-8 and 9-11, respectively; and Ballet Essentials, an informal 75-minute ballet class for adults ages 21 and up with little or no previous dance experience. These programs are all facilitated by NYCB dancers.

New York City Ballet offers daily tickets to customers aged 30 and under $ 30, day shows at the box office. Availability announced on Monday during performance period.
The New York City Fourth Ring Ballet Society offers discount tickets to members. The program is closed for new members in 2011.
New York Choreography Institute
City Ballet Choreography Institute was founded by Irene Diamond and Peter Martins in 2000. The institute has three main program programs: choreography sessions, providing choreographers with dancers and studio rooms; fellowship initiatives, annual awards to support new choreographers affiliated with ballet companies; and choreography forums, symposiums and roundtable discussions on choreography, music, and design elements.

The New York City Ballet Orchestra
The 66-member NYCB Orchestra is an important symphony institution in its own right, having played for almost all of the thousands of performances that NYCB has given for decades. It is one of the most versatile orchestras in the world, every week doing maybe three or four repertoires that other symphonies might be expected to do. The orchestra's main performers also performed the majority of concerts, other solos, and room music in the NYCB repertoire as well. The orchestra accompanies ballet on all North American tours, and while ballet uses the local orchestra on its international tour, the NYCB orchestra members often go together as soloists or extra players.
In addition to the orchestra members, NYCB has six pianists in full-time staff. They all perform in the pits with the orchestra on a regular basis.
The NYCB Orchestra also occasionally accompanies other dance companies when they visit The David H. Koch Theater from other cities. This engagement includes the Australian Ballet in spring 2012, and San Francisco Ballet in the fall of 2013.
For decades, the NYCB Orchestra has welcomed other recorded orchestra musicians to collaborate on special performances. Included among this group is John Serry Sr., who served as a major orchestra chord for 20 years of NYCB birthday in the premiere of Jacques d 'Amboise's Tchaikovsky Suite (1969).
