Creation and design
The name Gohan comes from the Japanese word "gohan" ( ?? , lit. "cooked rice" or "any food") , the continuation of the food naming scheme by Toriyama. Rice, being grain, is not usually considered a vegetable, although it is a common food. However, as the word "vegetable" is a culinary term, and not a botanical term, the name can also continue the naming scheme for the Saiyan character, which takes the name of the game of words about vegetables.
In conceptualization for Gohan's character, Toriyama initially included glasses or a jacket for his clothes, and usually, his hair was spiked as seen in the final design. With the end of arc Cell, Gohan intended to replace his father as the protagonist. However, Toriyama then decided against it, finding the character unsuitable for the role compared to his father.
Unlike the full blooded Saiyan, whose hair remains the same from birth, Gohan is drawn with varying lengths, and changes markedly in style. Initially, Gohan illustrated the garbed in a surcoat with kanji ?, stays in front and a four-star Dragon Ball mounted on his hat. Piccolo then gave him a keikogi made after Goku, but replaced the symbol with his own demon character " ? ". Usually afterwards, Gohan is interested in the keikogi that is modeled after Piccolo himself. In Namek, Gohan is depicted in a combat armor worn by Freeza's henchmen, who had been given by Vegeta in preparation for their meeting with Freeza. Before the second fight with Majin Boo, Gohan asks Kibito for clothes that resemble his father's, and then drawn in a keikogi that is identical to Goku. Gohan, from an alternative future, wore a keikogi similar to his father's, and had a long scar on his left eye.
Ability
Gohan has superhuman strength and resilience, as well as super human speed and reflexes, as seen during his training with his sister Goten. As a child, Gohan is portrayed with a large number of hidden potentials, which initially reveal only him when he experiences fierce anger or distress. The extent of this potential is shown consistently throughout the series as he ages and learns to master his strength from ongoing training and battles, the earliest example being during his brief bout with Raditz. Potential Gohan opened twice in series: first by Namekian Grand Elder, and then fully opened by Old Kai? -shin, who saw his power level rise to new heights, was able to easily defeat the seemingly invincible Majin Boo.
As a Half-Saiyan, he has the ability to become Oozaru, a giant ape-like creature, by absorbing waves from the full moon. He lost this ability after his tail was cut by Piccolo, and then Vegeta. He is the youngest third Saiyan to achieve Super Saiyan transformation at the age of nine years while practicing and surpassing his father Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time (hyperbolic time space) and as a view of the hidden potentials he opened during his training with his father, Gohan became the first Saiyan in the series for became Super Saiyan 2 during the battle against Cell. Although Gohan became weaker because of not training after Cell Games, he became stronger than he ever had after his potential was opened from Old Kai? -shin. Gohan with this power is even stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks because he is able to dominate Super Buu easily without changing.
Since this fight, Gohan has succumbed to the battle and has further weakened to the extent that he can not use his Super Saiyan transformation without forcing himself. Gohan was still able to hold himself against Freeza, Shisami and Tagoma in the form of his base and defeat them when he turned into Super Saiyan. After Freeza attack on Earth, Gohan re-train with Piccolo. During his training with Piccolo before the start of the Power Tournament, Gohan was pushed beyond his limits and managed to unlock his hidden powers once again, becoming stronger than ever.
Gohan has the ability to freely manipulate the life force energy known as ki to fly using Buk? -jutsu ( ??? , "Air Dance Technique") ,. He can also focus his ki to power the energy, such as Kamehameha ( ????? , lit. "Turtle Destruction Wave") or Masenko ( ??? , Masenk ? , lit. "Demon Flash") . Gohan has shown his defensive use of ki, such as producing a protective energy shield. Both as a child and an adult, Gohan is known as a capable swordsman, as well as an adept teacher.
Voice Actors
Gohan is voiced in the original Japanese anime and all other media by Masako Nozawa. Nozawa, who also voiced Goku, revealed that he did not know he would play Gohan until receiving the script on the day of recording his debut episode. Despite having to voice Gohan, Goku, Goten and Burdock, Nozawa claims he can go straight into their own characters only after seeing their image.
In Funimation and Saban Entertainment's early 1996, the English name of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan is voiced by Saffron Henderson. Henderson imitated his role in the AB Group and Westwood Media alternative rank for the British and Canadian market in 2000. Jillian Michaels replaced Henderson at the end of arc Cell, while his adult version was voiced by Brad Swaile. Henderson believes his experience playing Goku in Dragon Ball makes it easy to develop Gohan's voice, though emphasizing performing as he is "tiring" because of the action of the series requiring louder volume. She also remembers the scheduling conflict thanks to her marriage, setting the stage for the studio to audition other voice actors for part of Gohan, and disappointed at the role being overhauled.
In the Funimation rectum at home, Gohan's child incarnation was voiced by Stephanie Nadolny for various media until 2010 and Colleen Clinkenbeard for Dragon Ball Kai and later media while her mature incarnation was voiced by Kyle Hebert for almost all media and Dameon Clarke as "Future Gohan" for some episodes and TV-specific "History of Trunks . Nadolny was called to audition in 1999, when the English roster of Dragon Ball Z was overhauled. He said the most challenging time to voice his character was during his fight against Cell where he had to make it sound as "deep, tough and as few men as possible." Nadolny's voice was tense during the recording, causing him to occasionally leave the studio in agony. Hebert said that his role as Gohan and Dragon Ball Z narrator was close to him as they began his career. He also found the Battle of Gods to "really touch" beyond his fight, quoting Gohan knowing that he would become a father among the moments he found sentimental and happy to return to the franchise while repeating his role in the 'F' Awakening , also expressed interest in repeating his lines at Dragon Ball Kai as he has more experience.
In the English nickname of the Dragon Ball GT game video: Final Bout , Gohan is voiced by Lex Lang. In the nickname British Dragon Ball GT produced by Blue Water Studios which is distributed in Canada, he is voiced by Scott Roberts. In British films distributed in Europe by AB Groupe, Gohan is voiced by Jodi Forrest, with David Gasman voicing Gohan as an adult at The History of Trunks. In Toonami Asia dub produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment Dragon Ball Super , Gohan is here voiced by Chris Hackney. In a rare English nickname of the anime produced in the Philippines by Creative Products Corporation, Gohan is voiced by Ethel Lizano who also directs the rank. At the 1996 rank of a double feature that incorporates Cold Revenge and the Return of Cooler, Lizano is replaced by E.J. Galang, who is 12 years old when he voiced Gohan.

Appearance
In Dragon Ball
Gohan was introduced as a four-year-old son of the protagonist Goku, who was named after his great-grandfather. Described as polite and reserved, Gohan's story begins after his abduction by the space Saiyan named Raditz, who is also his uncle. While Goku is pinned to the ground, Gohan's extreme pressure explodes by releasing his sleeping powers, allowing him to injure Raditz. Piccolo then takes Gohan away after the fight and Goku's death, and trains him for the upcoming battle against the other two Saiyan, Vegeta and Nappa, though Piccolo is aware that training his greatest enemy son will be a risk. His guidance under Piccolo formed a deep bond between the two characters, with Piccolo finally sacrificing himself to save Gohan during their fight with Nappa. After Vegeta's defeat, Gohan traveled with Bulma and Krillin to Namek planet to use the Dragon Ball there, because the Dragon Ball on Earth has turned into stone because of the god of Earth, Our death. After successfully collecting the Dragon Ball, Gohan and others hope Piccolo lives again, causing Us and Dragon Ball to be restored. Gohan, along with Krillin and Vegeta, was then forced to meet with Frieza, who was looking for a Dragon Ball for eternity. Shortly after the fight with Freeza began, Krillin was impaled by one of the Freeza horns. Freeza stopped Gohan when he tried to rescue Krillin, who has now been thrown into the ocean below, and he mocks him, saying there is no point trying to save his friend because he and Vegeta will both die. Gohan was furious that he could not save Krillin and attack Freeza without hesitation. He successfully dropped Freeza onto the small island below, and then he blew it up with a series of explosions of energy before ending the attack with Masenko. Later in the fight, when Piccolo was repeatedly detonated from Freeza, who is now in his third form, Gohan blasts Freeza with another Masenko, and once again pushes him back with it. Freeza can send him back to Gohan without any damage, but he is once again surprised that a child can produce such an attack. Shortly after this, Freeza transformed into its original and most powerful form. As soon as he did this he immediately killed Dende, a Namekian young man who had secretly healed Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo and Vegeta. Gohan is angry with this and releases all his powers against Freeza. However, he can not land even one hit. After Goku turns into Super Saiyan and defeats Freeza, Namek planet explodes and Goku escapes while Freeza is left with serious injuries, Freeza is found in outer space by his father (Cold King) and turns into a cyborg. Gohan is shown to settle back to school life on Earth, waiting for Goku to come home from Namek.
After Trunks killed Freeza and his father, King Cold, then told Goku about Android, Gohan went into the desert with Goku and Piccolo to train upcoming threats. After Vegeta kills Android # 19, Dr. Gero (Android # 20) activates Android # 17 and # 18, and Cells are found, Gohan enters the Spirit Space and Time with Goku where they practice for 1 year (1 day on earth, but in their case according to Mr. Popo, Goku and Gohan still has 3 hours left in the room, but they come out after completing their training earlier than expected). Gohan makes the leap to the Super Saiyan when he is in the room and after they appear, both Goku and Gohan maintain the physical characteristics of the Super Saiyan without any lack of shape (increased aggression, energy loss, etc.). After Goku initially fights Cell but then realizes that he can not defeat him, Gohan is called to fight to surprise others and Cell. During the fight, Gohan asks Cell to stop the Cell Games tournament and then he tells him about his strength. The cell, instead of heeding Gohan's warning, attacked him in an attempt to force Gohan to show his true strength. Gohan holds his own for a while until Cell becomes impatient and bored. He releases the Cell Juniors on other fighters to provoke Gohan from attacking. After Android # 16 is killed by Cell, Gohan releases his temper and turns into Super Saiyan 2. Gohan easily defeats Cell Juniors and starts playing with Cell, now he has a much greater power level. This boomerang, however; he waits too long to finish the Cell, which decides to destroy himself when transformed back into his semi-perfect shape, as a last resort to destroy Gohan and Earth. Goku, in an act of self-sacrifice, uses teleportation to bring Cell to the Kaio-sama planet. Thinking Cells die, the fighters lower their guard only to be shocked by the explosion that killed Trunks. Cell returns, once regenerated from a single cell that survived the explosion, and also adopted instant transmission techniques. Just before Cell will finish Vegeta, Gohan interrupts him to make use of his left arm. When Cell fills one final wave of Kamehameha to finish the Earth, Gohan hears the voice of his father giving him the determination he needs to defeat Cell. They both launched a huge wave of Kamehameha with each other, who started the power struggle. Cell will defeat Gohan when Vegeta uses the rest of his energy to destroy Cell, which distracts him for a moment. Gohan uses this moment to release all his anger into his attack, which causes him to defeat Cell. Attacking the full force The cell that destroys all its cells, eventually kills him.
The Gohan of the alternate timeline, referred to as "Future Gohan", to distinguish him from his present incarnation of characters, is presented in volume # 33 of the original sidestory manga, Trunks the Story , where he proved to be the only one- the only surviving fighters; others are all dead in the hands of the android (sans Goku for having died of a heart virus before the arrival of android). Gohan is shown training Trunks to assist him in fighting Android # 17 and # 18. In this timeline, Gohan has become Super Saiyan and is depicted wearing a uniform similar to his father, one with his own kanji symbol on the back, Han , ? . Gohan stated he wore it in the hope of becoming as strong as his father one day, and mentioned that he had a striking resemblance to Goku while wearing it. He eventually lost his left arm against Android # 17 and # 18. He was eventually killed by two android during the battle in which they conspired against Gohan, killing him with an explosion of weapons like a machine gun.
In the present, Gohan is shown enrolled at Orange Star High School in Satan City. After foiling the crime as Super Saiyan, he gets the alias "Golden Warrior" ????? , Kiniro no Senshi ) from the public. To conceal his identity, and with the help of Bulma, he adopted the superhero persona he called "Great Saiyaman" ???????? , Gur? to Saiyaman ) . He also established a relationship with Videl. Participated in Tenkaichi Bud-kai 25, Gohan is described to have grown weaker, which is Daizensh? World Guide explained due to lack of training and anger in the transformation. Gohan, after his chi is absorbed by Spopovich and Yamu, chasing both and entering into Bobbidi's spacecraft with Kai? -shin, Goku and Vegeta, where Gohan then fights with Dabura. After Majin Boo's release and Gohan's defeat at his hands, Gohan was taken to Kai's home planet? -shin. After pulling out the Zeta Sword (Known in English Funimation Dub as Z Sword) and accidentally breaking it down in the training session, Gohan unknowingly releases Kai Lama? -shin, who then performs a prolonged ceremony to unlock Gohan's latent power. Gohan then returns to Earth and confronts Boo for the second time, and easily defeats him. However, his victory is temporary, as he is overwhelmed when Boo absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo. He is then absorbed by Boo. Although Goku and Vegeta managed to save him along with Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo, he was killed when Boo (now in his pure form) destroys the Earth. After being revived, Gohan was able to help Goku's Genki-dama by lending his chi . After Boo's defeat and a ten-year gap, Gohan eventually becomes a scholar, married to Videl and they have a princess Pan.

Reception
In 1993, Gohan was first placed in the popularity poll of Dragon Ball selected by Weekly Sh's readers? Nen Jump , and was also voted the third most popular character by fans of the series for the 2004 book Dragon Ball Forever . Due to Gohan's popularity, other merchandise, such as action figures, video games, and clothing have featured Gohan in Japan and in various countries around the world. In an interview featured in the second Dragon Ball GT Perfect Files, a companion book released in December 1997 by Shueisha's Jump Comics Selection, Masako Nozawa, actress Gohan's voice, stated that his favorite episode voiced Gohan was "Sorry, Robot-san - The Desert of Vanishing Tears". Saffron Henderson, the original English voice actor Gohan, said he felt protective of the role and considered him one of his favorites. In addition, the original Giman Funimation voice actor, Stephanie Nadolny said that playing Gohan is a unique and much loved experience. CJA Glover from Moviepilot rated Gohan his third favorite comic character, acknowledged Gohan "has always been an idol to me" because he's related to bottling his anger and being a gentle person, snapping "will come loose and it will be hard to bottle it back again. " In conclusion, Glover wrote that Gohan is definitely "one of my favorite anime and manga characters." Gohan's relationship with Piccolo's mentor during the Saiyan arc is praised, seen as "complex" and "culminating in a truly emotional and inspiring moment that we do not often expect from your average animation series." Tomoko Hiroki of Bandai Namco considered Gohan his favorite character of the series.
Most of Gohan's praise comes from his role in the Cell arc of Dragon Ball Z. Author IGN D. F. Smith liked how during the Cell Games, Gohan has more screentime than Goku, and praised the scene as one of the greatest moments of story storytelling. Theron Martin from Anime News Network celebrates Gohan's development in Cell Games as he grows and becomes stronger. The character battle against the Cell during the arc and its transformation into Super Saiyan 2 was positively received as some of the best in the whole series, the fight was also praised for its animation. Both Anime Focus and John Begley believe Dragon Ball Z may end up with Gohan's defeat of Cell, the last reason that concludes it will be "giving it a sense of pain and closure that will retroactively give a greater sense of depth and purpose. "Luke Ryan Baldock of The Hollywood News feels Gohan's development is the focus of Cell Games and that he is beginning to match his father's Goku abilities, calling their relationship" interesting to watch out for. " Nick Hartel's review states that "continuous Gohan improvement" makes her happy and the final episode of Cell's storyline "really sees this pay off from a narrative standpoint." Reviewer Todd Douglass Jr. wrote that the series split the focus between Goku and Gohan during the start of the series as they grew on their own, finding it to be "an interesting way to handle the storyline but also important as it demonstrates Gohan's growth as a person and a fighter."
Gohan's role and character at the end of this series meets with more mixed reviews. Michael Zupan's reviewer wrote about his disillusionment with character, "Gohan was once the most promising warrior in the galaxy, with the potential for even his best father, Goku... and this is where he was at seven years later... Dress up in a green dress, tights black and Lost in Space helmets to defeat the robbers? "Anime Focus found humor in his Great Saiyaman proposition and his" awkward but sincere "relationship with Videl, but thought it was" largely uninspired and dragging and felt very flat after flying high antique bow before. " The reviewer Brad Stephenson argues that an increasingly old and more "emotionally complex" character provides Dragon Ball Z with a real sense of development and meaning. While controversial, lighter and more casual fans of the show tend to enjoy Saiyaman saga because of the comedic tone and way of describing the greater of life's numbers in real-life situations. Josh Begley enjoys Gohan trying to find his place in high school and his role as brother to Goten, but considers the Saiyaman Agung's mask not comedic and becomes embarrassed on behalf of his character. Anime Focus was impressed with his fight against Majin Boo after he powered up, calling it "a rare opportunity for him to flex his muscles" by giving Majin Boo "an impressive beatdown". Gohan ranks first in The Artifice writer Santiago Rashad lists "Top Ten Misused Dragon Ball Characters". Rashad argues that the role of characters in the series has suffered from counterattacks by fans not wanting him to be the protagonist after his defeat from Cell as he stated: "He was never received by fans, and thus the event meant to be never his. b-plot and he's degraded into a release thrower after the clutch is closer to Cell. "
Sam Leach from Anime News Network notes that fans of this series tend to joke Piccolo is a better father figure than Gohan, and feels that Dragon Ball Super emphasizes it when Piccolo begins training. he again. On the other hand, Leach criticizes how Super is trying to teach "life lessons" to an adult Gohan. The fact that Piccolo calls it "arrogant", despite the kindness and humility of Gohan, is seen as a bad plot point by the reviewers.
