In Australia , the national representative team of many sports has nicknames , used informally when referring to teams in the media or in conversations. These nicknames usually come from well-known Australian symbols. Often this nickname is combined with the name of a commercial sponsor, such as "Qantas Wallabies" or "Telstra Dolphins". Some names are portmanteau words with the second element -roo , of kangaroo; such as "Olyroos" for the Olympic association football team.

Histori

The oldest nicknames are Kangaroo and Wallabies for rugby football league and rugby union teams. The other names are newer, mostly created to help publicize a traditionally unpopular sport in Australia. Some journalists criticize the practice as embarrassing, appealing, or pushed by the PR.

The name "Wallabies" was chosen by the 1908 rugby union party, making the first tour of the northern hemisphere. The British newspapers have dubbed the 1905 New Zealand tour team "All Blacks" from their kit colors; 1906 South African tourists have adopted "Springboks". The "rabbit" was first proposed for Australia, but was rejected because the rabbit was known as a pest. Until the 1980s, only the tour was "Wallabies"; players in eight tours until 1984 were "The First Wallabies" to "Eight Wallabies".

The side of the rugby league tour arrived in England later in 1908 with a live kangaroo as a mascot and was nicknamed "Kangaroo". "Kangaroo" was originally called only for the team at "Kangaroo Tours" to England and France. In 1994 the Australian Rugby League extended its nickname to all international for reasons of sponsorship, drawing criticism to break with tradition. The first match like that was a 58-0 win over France at Parramatta Stadium on 6 July 1994.

Among the long-established sports, test cricket and the Davis Cup tennis team have no common nickname. The 1967 Australian Football World Tour Team Harry Beitzel was unofficially dubbed the Garapan of their striking uniform. Although this side is the predecessor of Australia's next international football team, the nickname has not been maintained.

The Australian Tennis Magazine invites readers to suggest a nickname for the Davis Cup team in 1996. The Australian Fed Cup Team has been called Cockatoos, first suggested by player Casey Dellacqua in a press conference in April 2012 match against Germany. The name has been embraced by teammates and used on the Australian Tennis managers' website.

As part of the strategic business plan of 1998, Cricket Australia surveyed "stakeholders" in 1998 about possible nicknames, to increase marketing opportunities. The state cricket team at Shield Sheffield has benefited from adopting the nickname in the 1990s. 69% opposed the national nickname, partly from courtesy and partly because the best names were taken by other teams.

Australian Athletics held a competition for nicknames for its squad for the 2001 Athletics World Championships. The winning entry is "The Diggers", from the nickname for ANZAC soldiers. This was quickly abandoned after criticism from the Returned and Services League of Australia and others that this was an inappropriate use of the term. The previous team had a slightly used nickname, "The Blazers".

In December 2004, the Australian Football Association changed its name to the Australian Football Federation (FFA) and announced an attempt to recruit football associations as "football" rather than "football" in Australia. The national team has been dubbed "Socceroos" by journalist Tony Horstead on a 1967 tour to South Vietnam. FFA chairman Frank Lowy commented, "It's commonly used and a well-loved name, but we may see it fade when evolution takes place," and suggested some national soccer teams have nicknames. In 2016, FFA's announcement of Caltex as a sponsor is titled "Caltex Australia with the Socceroos along the way".
