School colors

The color of the UCLA athletics team is True Blue and Gold. In the early days of school, UCLA had the same color as the University of California, Berkeley; Yale blue and gold.

When Red Sanders football coach came to UCLA for the 1949 season he redesigned the football uniform. Yale blue color turns into a lighter blue color. Sanders suspects that the blue baby will look better on the field and in the movie. She will dub the blue baby "Powderkeg blue" uniform, blue powder with explosive kick. For the 1954 football season, Sanders added a golden circle on the shoulder, UCLA Line. UCLA still uses different color colors. They have an alternative uniform dominated by the Navy. Their helmets have UCLA scripts at Royal.

The 2013 team won the 109th UCLA NCAA Championship and was first in baseball in the 2013 World Series of Colleges by defeating Mississippi State 3-1 and 8-0.

Many UCLA baseball players have gone to play in Major League Baseball (MLB). In the 2009 World Series, Chase Utley scored two home runs to help the Philadelphia Phillies win Game 1. There were a total of four former UCLA baseball players in the 2009 playoffs: Philadelphia Ben Francisco and Chase Utley, Colorado Garrett Atkins, and St. Louis. Louis' Troy Glaus, which is the 2002 World Series MVP for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Chris Chambliss and Gerrit Cole are the number one choice overall in the MLB draft. Trevor Bauer was designed as a No. pick. 3 by Arizona Diamondbacks on June 6, 2011. Former UCLA shortt Brandon Crawford hit a grand-slam home run in major-league debut with San Francisco Giants on 27 May 2011, and helped the Giants win the 2012 World Major World Series. Cole made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates by winning his first four games which he launched and also drove in two games with one in the first time in the premier league of 2013.

Basketball (men)

Some of the most respected championships were won by the Men's Basketball team under coaches John Wooden and Jim Harrick. The rich UCLA basketball legacy has produced 11 NCAA championships - 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1995. From 1971 to 1974, UCLA won 88 consecutive men's basketball games, an NCAA record for men. UConn Huskies women's basketball team has recently set the overall NCAA basketball record with 90 matches and 91 series of consecutive wins. The 35-year period (1940-1974) earlier and included the UCLA streak is characterized by less dynasties, however: 20 different male teams won titles over that range. In comparison, the women's game to date has resulted in a 35% less parity (tournament), with 13 schools winning all 35 titles offered since the beginning.

The previous list of UCLA basketball teams has included great players such as Rafer Johnson, 1960 Decathlon Olympic champion Gail Goodrich, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor), Bill Walton, Reggie Miller, and Walt Hazzard. The Bruins also have a winning record for 54 seasons in a row from the 1948-1949 season to the 2001-2002 season.

In recent years, UCLA Men's Basketball has again become famous under Coach Ben Howland. Between 2006 and 2008, UCLA has become three consecutive Fours Final, while UCLA players have received many awards, notably Arron Afflalo, 2007 First-Team All American and Pac-10 Player of the Year, and Kevin Love, a 2008 First- Team All American and Pac-10 Player of the Year. UCLA has produced the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award winners, six of them by Abdul-Jabbar and one by Walton, who is Abdul-Jabbar's successor.

In March 2013, UCLA freed men's head coach Ben Howland from his job after UCLA awarded 83-63 to Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The current head coach is Steve Alford, former coach in New Mexico and Iowa. He won the NCAA championship as a player under Bobby Knight in Indiana.

Football

The Bruins have played in the Rose Bowl Game 12 times, winning 5 of them. The Bruins has won or shared a conference title 17 times. Among many former UCLA football stars is Jackie Robinson (better known for his exploits as a baseball player, however with 4-sportsman and All-American), winning Heisman Trophy Gary Burden, Bob Waterfield, Troy Aikman, Carnell Lake, and Tommy Maddox. One of the great moments in recent history for the Bruins occurred on December 2, 2006, when they defeated USC 13-9 in one of the biggest disruptions in the competition. The Bruins is the Pac-12 Conference South Division Champions for two consecutive years and plays at Pac-12 Football Championship Games 2011 and 2012.

UCLA became the first school to have the top winners in basketball and soccer in the same year as Gary Burden won the Heisman Cup and Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) won this year's US Basketball Writers Association in 1968.

15 football players and coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, John Sciarra being the last pioneer in Class 2014. The leading footballer and alumnus of the UCLA football team is the current star of NCIS Harmon. Award-winning "all-around excellence", Harmon led his team to victory several times as quarterback.

Founded in 1934, UCLA rugby is one of the historically great rugby teams. UCLA won 3 national championships, and collected 362-46-2 records from 1966 to 1982, but the program lost university status in 1982. The Bruins played Division 1 rugby at the Rugby Conference PAC. The Bruins are led by head coach Scott Stewart, who previously played international rugby for Canada.

UCLA rugby has steadily improved in recent years. UCLA completes the 2010-11 season ranked 25th in the country. In the 2011/12 season, UCLA came second in the Pacific Conference, reaching the men's national playoff quarters in 2012, and finishing the 11th season in the country. During the 2012-13 season, UCLA came second in the PAC conference, highlighted by a 50-38 win over the Utah 6 ranking, which pushed UCLA into the top 10 in the national rankings. UCLA - along with fellow PAC Cal and Utah schools - is one of eight original teams to form the Varsity Cup, which begins playing in 2013. UCLA reached the 2015 Varsity Cup quarter-finals, before losing to defending champions BYU.

UCLA has also been successful in rugby sevens. UCLA reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational sheep race rugby tournament. UCLA beat Arizona State to finish third in the PAC 7s tournament 2012. UCLA beat Dartmouth to reach the semifinals of the 2013 Academy Rugby Championship at PPL Park in Philadelphia in a live tournament on NBC. UCLA re-reached the semi-finals of the Rugby Championship of the College of 2014, before losing, 17-20, until the last champion Cal. UCLA won the 2014 West Coast 7s with a 14-12 upset win over Cal in the final.

    Badminton

UCLA male badminton team men won three national championships in 1977, 1981 and 1982. The 1977 squad was led by Chris Kinard, the doubles winner of the US Men's Singles Championships before and during his career at UCLA. Kinard is a member of the U.S. Badminton Hall of Fame.

    Athletic facilities

In 2014, UCLA named all its recreational and athletic facilities in honor of Jackie Robinson, who is a sports student athlete at the school and then playing Major League Baseball as the first African American to do so in the league. Jackie Robinson "42" Monument "Athletics and Recreation" was installed in front of John Wooden Recreation Center and inaugurated on 5 March 2016. The school also retired number 42 which is the number Robinson used as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Two well-known sports facilities serve as a home place for UCLA sports. Since 1982, the Bruin football team has played a home game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. From 1923-1981, including the year of the 1955 Bruins National Championship, the team played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. Women's gymnastics, men's and women's basketball, and volleyball teams play at Pauley Pavilion on campus. The softball team played on campus at Easton Stadium. Down to the hill, water polo team, as well as team swimming and diving, compete at the Spieker Aquatics Center. For baseball, there is Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium, which is located close to campus.

In the 2004 Athens match, UCLA sent 56 athletes, more than any other university in the country. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Bruins won 15 medals, including 4 gold, 9 silver and 2 bronze. In addition, five trainers came from UCLA: Jill Ellis (women's soccer, gold), Guy Baker (women's water polo, silver), Bob Alejo (men's beach volleyball, gold), Jeannette Boldon (women's tracks and pitch, some medals) , and John Speraw (men's volleyball, gold).

    Symbolism

The Bruin mascots are Joe and Josephine Bruin. There have been a number of bruins editions over the years, with happy bruins being a fan favorite. The evil one has retired. One of the old mascots has been retired to the Bruin Hall of Fame. They have participated in other events for UCLA in addition to athletic events.

In 1984, the UCLA Alumni Association celebrated its 50th anniversary by presenting a statue of "The Bruin", located at Bruin Plaza, to the university (see picture above). It is billed as the largest bear statue in the United States, with a length of 10 feet, a width of 6 feet, 3 feet and weighs more than 2 tons.

The Solid Gold Sound from the UCLA Bruin Marching Band entertained the crowds in the Bruin game. School fight songs are "Sons of Westwood" and "The Mighty Bruins".

The spirit team includes the cheering squad, the dance team, and the shouting crew next to the mascot. UCLA alumni band is the official band of gymnastics team at school.

    Rivalry

UCLA shares a traditional sports competition with nearby Southern California University (USC). This competition is relatively unique in the NCAA Division's sport as both schools are located within the same city, Los Angeles. The Lexus Gauntlet is the name given to the now defunct competition between UCLA and USC at 18 sports universities both of which compete head-to-head; in 2003, 2005 and 2007 UCLA won the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy, while the University of Southern California won the trophy in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009. The official sponsoring competition was held from 2001 until the end of the license contract in 2009 the annual football showcasing both teams competing for Victory Bell.

California and UCLA have met annually in the football field since 1939. Since UCLA was established as a southern branch of the University of California, this series takes on the quality of sibling rivalry. The series was dominated early by Cal, followed by dominance by UCLA in the 1950s to the 80s, and has become more balanced recently.

UCLA has a basketball competition with Notre Dame, with games played every year from 1966 to 1995. After UCLA's victory on 7 February 2009, UCLA led the all-time series 28-19. UCLA and Arizona performance influenced the national opinion of the conference.

From 1993 to 1999 the school had a clothing contract with Reebok.

In 1999, an agreement was reached with Adidas for six years, ending in June 2005. The agreement is to provide equipment and clothing for 21 UCLA inter-university teams. Additional terms of the agreement include internship opportunities for UCLA students and an exclusive license to wear athletic replicas. The reported monetary terms of the agreement include $ 1,625 million in cash and $ 1.3 million in equipment annually.

In 2005, the deal was renewed for $ 2.6 million in cash and $ 1.6 million in equipment. Additional terms include one full-time Adidas employee on UCLA campus, $ 2,500 annually for "non-UCLA charity" projects selected by the head coach of Soccer or Basketball, a game ticket for Adidas executives, a thank you radio during the game, and appearances by the head coach of soccer and basketball at the Adidas show.

In April 2010, a letter of intent to update was achieved between UCLA Athletics and Adidas. In June of the same year, the terms of the agreement were settled but not published. In his report, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero stated that the deal was for seven years and "will be close" to a deal that Adidas had with Michigan worth $ 7.5 million.

In May 2016, UCLA signed a 15-year, 280 million agreement with Under Armor sportswear manufacturer that began in the 2017-18 season.
