On their last possession in the first half, 49ers incised nine play drives that ended with 19 goals on the pitch. Before the holder Matt Cavanaugh received a snap from the middle, a snowball thrown from the stand landed right in front of him. Disturbed, he mismanaged soccer and could not hold him for Ray Wersching's kicker. In desperation he grabs the ball and tries to operan forward, but no receiver is down and fall incomplete. There is no obviously unfair punishment or action being summoned, and the Broncos take over. They went on to win 17-16, making field goals fail to be an important factor.
After the match, referee Jim Tunney explained, "We have no choice in terms of offense or calling it in the home team or fans." Nothing in the rule book lets us do that. " He ordered increased stadium security at half time, and no further incidents occurred.
