The Ole Miss Rebels is an interofficial athletic team representing the University of Mississippi. Originally known as "Mississippi Flood", the team was renamed Rebellion in 1936 and competed in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. The only exception was the rifle team, which participated in the Great America Rifle Conference because the SEC does not sponsor the sport. The colors of red schools (PMS 186) and navy blue (PMS 2767), are deliberately chosen to reflect the colors of Harvard and Yale schools, respectively. With a long history in interollegiate athletics (Ole Miss started football in 1890), the university is competing in 18 men's and women's sports. The athletes, 630 in all, received all academic academic awards from 1995 to 2004.
Although the campus committee adopted Rebel Black Bear as a mascot in the field for a sporting event to replace Colonel Reb, both teams retained the name Rebels. On October 6, 2017, Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter announced that the new university mascot would be Landshark, starting with the 2018-19 season.

The 1992 team won the SEC with a record 11-0 conference, and finished the season with a final record of 29-3, the most victory in the team's history.
The program has resulted in outstanding players like brother Peggie Gillom, who still holds school records for goals and rebounds, and Jennifer Gillom, Olympic medalist, Kodak All-American and SEC Best Female Athlete of the Year.
Probably the most decorated player in the program's history, guard Armintie Price, joined the Rebels for the 2003-2004 season and immediately collected the SEC Freshman of the Year. In his college career, Price was named the All-SEC First Team three times and became the first player to be named SEC Defensive Player of the Year twice. With Cheryl Miller he is one of only two players in NCAA history to record 2000 points, 1000 rebounds, 400 assists and 400 steals. As a senior, he was a finalist for the Wood Award and was named for the All-American Kodak Team; he led his team to their first Eight Elite appearance since 1992. Price was composed as a third overall in the 2007 WNBA Draft and continued into a remarkable first season with Chicago Sky, culminating in the Rookie of the Year award.
Legend Coaching and Basketball Hall of Famer Van Chancellor built his heritage with eighteen years as head coach of the Rebel, where he drew a record of 439 wins and 154 defeats. The Chancellery's legacy also includes several player-turned-coaches, including Jennifer Gillom, who helped the Chancellor's Chancellor of the Senior National Women's World Team into the 2002 World Championships; head coach Carol Ross, who returned to her alma mater in 2003; and current associate head coach, Peggie Gillom.
Carol Ross resigned as head coach on April 26, 2007. During his four year tenure, the Rebels' scored 77 wins and 50 defeats. He was replaced by assistant coach Renee Ladner. Ladner resigned at the end of the 2011-12 season after experiencing 70-82 in five seasons. Adrian Wiggins, who led Fresno State to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, was hired as his successor. However, Wiggins was sacked before the start of the 2012-13 season amid a potential investigation of NCAA recruitment. Assistant Brett Frank was named as the temporary head coach after Wiggins shot.
After the 2012-13 season, Ole Miss hired Matt Insell, son of Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Insell, as permanent head coach. The younger Insell had spent the previous five seasons as an assistant under Matthew Mitchell in Kentucky.

The term "Landshark" originated in 2008 from senior linebacker Tony Fein and was adopted by the defense team of the Ole Miss football team. Students can choose OrgSync platform from 26 September to 29 September. The Related Student Senate voted for, and over 4100 votes were given. Of the votes, 81% support the mascot change.
On October 6, 2017, Mississippi University Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter announced that the university would make the switch from Rebel the Black Bear and adopt Landshark as the official mascot of the University. The change is effective immediately.

Songs and cheers
Songs
The song of the school struggle is "Forward Rebels." It is played by Ole Miss "The Pride of the South" marching band at an official university sport event.
The song "Dixie" was played by Ole Miss band for years on athletic events.
A modification of the song Elvis Presley An American Trilogy, now known as From Dixie with Love or Slow Dixie, is also played during football games, both at home and on the spot. The song was first played during a part-time show at the 1980's Ole Miss/LSU game at Tiger Stadium. Upon completion, the band received a standing ovation of more than 70,000 people in the hands of that day. It soon became a staple of the band for many years. During Ole Miss 2003's victory, audiences began shouting "South will rise again" in place of "Truth lined up" at the end of the song. The singing remains a staple for the next few years. In 2009, with Ole Miss in the national spotlight for football success, increased political pressure to get rid of the singing. The Government Student Body proposes to call the song to be changed to "To Hell with LSU". When this proposal was not enforced, the university asked the band to stop playing the song.
The modified "Dixie" called "Dixie Fanfare" was also played by the band.
