History
The NGU was founded in 1892 as a non-government school by private individuals and is named North Greenville High School , a junior high school in northern Greenville County. The ground for the school was donated by Benjamin F. Neves. It is operated by the Greenville Northern Baptist Association, and was established to expand educational offerings in the northern part of the Greenville County mountains.
The school accepted the state charter in 1904. It was taken over by the Southern Baptist Convention's Home Mission Board a year later, and was renamed the North Greenville Baptist Academy in 1915. The North Greenville Baptist Association regained control of the school in 1929.
In 1934, the academy expanded to include junior colleges. In 1949, it was transferred to the South Carolina Baptist Convention, which renamed school North Greenville Junior College a year later. In 1957, the school was accredited as a two-year college, and a high school program was dropped altogether. It was just North Greenville College in 1972.
NGC began offering first-class junior and senior classes in 1992, in Christian studies and church music and added a teacher education program in 1997. The NGU assumed university status in 2006 and began to award a master's degree as well.
