Son Goku (Japanese: ? , Hepburn: Son Gok? ) is the fictitious character and main protagonist of the Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama. He is based on Sun Wukong, the main character in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Goku first made his debut on Dragon Ball's Bulma and Son Goku ( ??????? , Buruma to Son Gok? ) , originally published in Japanese magazine Weekly Sh? nen Jump on December 3, 1984, as an eccentric monkey-tailed boy who practiced martial arts and possessed superhuman powers. He meets Bulma and joins him on a journey to find the Dragon Balls granting the request.
Originally believed to have been born on Earth, Goku later learned that he was a member of an alien spacecraft race called Saiyans, which is also the reason for his superhuman strength, and his birth name is Kakarot ( ????? , Kakarotto ) . As Goku grows up, he becomes the strongest fighter on Earth and protects his home planet from those who try to harm him. Goku is portrayed as a cheerful, cheerful and friendly person when calm, but quick and seriously strategic minded when in combat and also quite enthusiastic to fight. He is able to centralize his Ki and use it for powerful energy-based attacks; the most prominent is his signature Kamehameha ( ????? ) , where Goku launches a blue energy explosion from the palm his hands. Also pure in heart, Goku has often given compassion to his enemies, who often make him an additional ally in the process (though also has resulted in others taking advantage of his kindness), and he is one of the few people who can ride the magic of the cloud called Kinto'un ( ??? , lit. "Somersault Cloud", renamed "Flying Nimbus" in funimation dub) ; which is another element adapted from Journey to the West .
As a protagonist, Goku appears in most of the episodes, movies, television specials and OVAs of the anime manga adaptations ( Dragon Ball , Dragon Ball Z , Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super ), as well as many franchise video games. Due to the international popularity of this series, Goku has become one of the most recognizable and iconic characters in the world. Outside the Dragon Ball franchise, Goku has made a cameo appearance in Toriyama's self-parody series Neko Majin Z, has been the subject of other parodies, and has appeared on special occasions. Most Western audiences were introduced to the adult version of Goku that appeared in the Dragon Ball Z anime, itself an adaptation of Dragon Ball manga volume 17-42, compared to the beginning. shape of the child, due to the limited success of the first series abroad. Critical reception Goku has been very positive and he is often regarded as the greatest manga and anime character of all time.

Conception and creation
Goku, and Dragon Ball in general, evolved from one of the previous one-shot Akira Toriyama series called Dragon Boy. In this story, the protagonist is very similar to Goku but has a pair of wings. When Toriyama created the Dragon Ball, he was inspired by Journey to the West . To create with the idea of ââSun Wukong, Toriyama designs Goku as a boy with a monkey tail, not a complete simian, because his tail will give the character a distinguishing feature. He then states that his tail hurts to draw, so why should he be cut off early on. Toriyama initially did not plan to make Goku an alien, it was not until the introduction of a fighter from another planet that he formed as Saiyan (span lang = "ja"> , Saiya-jin ) . Goku is given the ability to teleport to any planet within seconds, so Toriyama can improve the pace of the story.
Wanting Dragon Ball to have a Chinese appearance, Toriyama uses the color of the robe worn by Buddhist monks for Goku d? Gi . During the early chapters of the manga, Toriyama's editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, commented that Goku looks rather plain. Toriyama gave her a simple outfit deliberately because it was a manga fights, so to counter this she added some characters like Master Roshi and Krillin, and created Tenkaichi Bud? Kai ( ????? , lit. "Ultimate Martial Art Tournament Under Heaven") to focus the story line about battle. To oppose the assumption that Goku would win the tournament, Toriyama made him lose the first and second but won the third. Toriyama also mentions that Torishima wants Goku to form a relationship with Bulma but this has never been applied to the series.
The Toriyama editor initially opposed Goku growing up, saying it was unusual to have the protagonist drastically change in the manga; however, he gave up when Toriyama threatened that he would not be able to continue the series if the characters did not. Toriyama later stated he had grown up as a means to make drawing fights more easily. When Toriyama thinks of Super Saiyan (
Dragon Ball GT's chief designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru said he suffered from designing the appearance of Goku Super Saiyan 4, which was the idea of ââthe show's producers, questioning whether it is necessary to go further with the transformation. Because Super Saiyan 4 was brought while inside Saiyan ? Zaru ( ?? , lit. "Great Ape") is formed, it makes hair more "wild" and covers Goku's body with feathers red. There is only one final concept of the character, although Nakatsuru does consider making blonde hair, he ends up choosing black because it gives more contrast to the red feather.
During the plan of the last Dragon Ball Super story bow, it was decided that Goku should have another transformation: The Ultra Instinct. The concept is that Ultra Instinct will be completely different from the previous Super Saiyan Goku transformation.
Design
Goku is usually known for his unique hairstyle, which does not change long except in his Super Saiyan form, where his hair changes color and is in accordance with the shape he takes. This is explained by Vegeta to be a common characteristic of a full blooded Saiyan. Goku's hair color changes from black to golden after climbing into Super Saiyan, and the iris turns from black to turquoise. In the form of Super Saiyan God, the hair color and the iris turn to dark red. In Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form, the hair color and the iris turn to blue (hence the nickname "Super Saiyan Blue"). Goku prefers to dress in uniform d? Gi to show his devotion to the Earth, not his race uniform standard; the only time she really wore this outfit was during her training with Gohan before Cell Games.
In his childhood, Goku was introduced wearing a dark uniform d? Gi with red and white bracelets obi tied in the bow above the waist. Throughout most of the series, however, Goku is generally seen wearing orange d? Gi uniform with a short-sleeved blue shirt, blue, blue, obi wristband tied around the waist, and dark boots with yellow or red stripes. Goku also often wears the kanji that is circled from his training master on the front and back of this uniform; the first is Master Roshi, "kame" (? , meaning "tortoise") ; the second is King Kai, "kaio" ( ?? , meaning "king of the world") ; and the third is his, "Go" (? , which means "wisdom" or "enlightenment") . Finally, Goku stops wearing the kanji and replaces it with a blue sash for his belt. In Dragon Ball GT , he is seen wearing multi-color d? Gi which consists of a blue-fold shirt, yellow pant, pink bracelet, white obi tied with a knot above the waist, and black shoes with white stockings. In Dragon Ball Super , Goku uses orange and blue signatures d? Gi with the kanji "Go" again, though during the Golden Frieza arc and Universe 6 arc he wears a special uniform d? gi which consists of an orange-shirt shirt and pants that match the blue bracelet, blue and blue shoes obi tied in a knot on the side of his waist (which debuted in the Dragon Ball Z : Resurrection 'F' ).
Voice Actors
In the Japanese version of each of the Dragon Ball anime series and the next related media, Goku has been voiced by Masako Nozawa. Toriyama chose Nozawa after hearing his audition sample, commenting that only Goku could sound like that. Nozawa stated that he was very excited when he got the role because he always wanted to be in one of Toriyama's works. He says he should be aware of the fact that Goku grew up in the mountains and does not know much about the world. Despite having to voice Goku, Gohan, Goten and Bardock, Nozawa claims he can go straight into their own characters only after seeing their image. Nozawa explains that he did not read the manga so he does not know what will happen inside the story until the recording, making his reaction the same as Goku.
In various English versions, Goku has been played by different actors because different companies produce dubs, for reasons of changing the company's ADR and recording studio, or because the actors stop.

Tim Jones of the THEM Anime Review notes that Goku is not an omnipotent character in the first anime series, unlike Dragon Ball Z, and does not disappear for long periods between saga. They also love the way the series' portrays its entire adventure, making it a good main character. Rationalmagic.com praises the innocent Goku as one of the funniest parts of this series. According to Julius Weideman, Goku's journey and growing power produced characters that won "the youthful admiration everywhere." By 2015, Japan Association of HUT anniversaries officially declare May 9th as "Goku Day" ( ???? , Gok? No hai ) . In Japanese the numbers 5 and 9 can be pronounced as "Go" and "Ku" respectively. Jason Thompson stated that unlike "male" heroes of other popular manga in the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as City Hunter and Fist of North Star , Toriyama made cartoon protagonist (Goku) and small, thus starting a trend that according to Thompson continues to this day. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda and Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto said that Goku inspired their protagonists as well as the series structure. Commenting on Goku's popularity, Kishimoto states that when people hear the name "Son Goku", they no longer think of the character of Journey to the West , but instead the Dragon Ball ' s protagonist comes to mind. In addition, for the second half of the series, Kishimoto created a monkey named Son Goku which refers to the Toriyama character to the ape point of having four tails like the four-star Dragon Ball Goku from his grandfather.

Despite his positive reception, Goku also receives negative feedback for his character in Dragon Ball Super because his constant desire to fight a stronger enemy results in preparing a story in which all the universes can be destroyed. While Anime Now, Richard Eisenbeis believes that Goku is determined to protect his universe, the fact that he does not care about the destroyed universe of other losers also receives a negative response. In January 2017, Nowaza won two Guinness World Records for his longevity as Goku; she has been the sole voice of her role for over 23 years.
