Donovan Mitchell Jr. (born September 7, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association (NBA). She plays college basketball for Louisville Cardinals. He was selected by the Denver Nuggets by picking overall 13 in the NBA 2017 draft and then trading on draft nights to Utah Jazz.

Donovan Mitchell was born on September 7, 1996 from Donovan Mitchell Sr. parents. and Nicole Mitchell. His father Donovan Sr. serving as director of player relations for New York Mets. He has a younger sister named Jordan. Mitchell was born and raised in Elmsford, New York and attended Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, Connecticut. Mitchell plays AAU basketball for The City and Riverside Hawks programs based in New York City.

High school career

Mitchell attended Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut for his second year of high school before moving to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire for his junior and senior years. Along with basketball, he also played baseball in high school for two years, but focused on basketball when he went to Brewster, a move that gave him more attention than a college basketball coach. He is committed to the University of Louisville to play college basketball.

College career

Mitchell decided to wear the number 45 jersey, showing his appreciation for Michael Jordan, as 45 was the amount Jordan wore for his baseball career and during the early part of his first comeback in 1995. As a freshman at the University of Louisville, Mitchell averaged 7.4 points , 1.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. As a freshman, he averaged 15.6 points, 2.7 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. Mitchell shot 46.3 percent of the floor, 35.4 percent of the back of the bow and 80.6 percent of the free-throw line. He was named for the First Team of the Atlantic Coast Conference. After the season, he entered the NBA 2017 draft, but did not immediately hire an agent.

Professional career

Utah Jazz (2017-present)

Mitchell was designed by the Denver Nuggets by picking overall 13 in the 2017 NBA draft only for trading into the Utah Jazz to choose 24 (Tyler Lydon) and Trey Lyles. On July 5, 2017, Mitchell signed a four-year rookie contract with the Jazz. On July 11, 2017, Mitchell signed a multi-year shoe deal with Adidas. Later that day, Mitchell scored 37 points against the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2017 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the most by any player during the NBA 2017 Summer League. In his NBA debut on October 18, 2017, Mitchell recorded 10 points and 4 assists against the Denver Nuggets. On December 1, 2017, he scored 41 points in a 114-108 victory over New Orleans Pelicans. He set a Jazz score record for a rookie and became the first NBA rookie to score 40 points in a single match since Blake Griffin in 2011. He surpassed the record of Darrell Griffith 38's team in 1981. Mitchell also became the seventh rookie in franchise history to have game points 30-plus, and the first has 40-plus point games. On January 4, 2018, Mitchell was named the Rookie Conference of the Month Area for December 2017 after averaging 23.1 points, 3.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 34.3 minutes per game during December. On January 15, 2018, Mitchell surpassed Karl Malone for the top 20 points of the season during his rookie season when he had 20 20 point games. On February 2nd, 2018 Donovan recorded the second 40-point game of his rookie season against the Phoenix Suns, becoming the first rookie keeper to carve two 40-game games since Allen Iverson in 1996-1997. On 5 February 2018, Donovan was officially named by the NBA as an injury substitute for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon (tense left hip flexor) for the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. He won 48 and 50 scoring contests in the first half, then 50 and 48 in the final round became the first rookie to win the contest since Zach LaVine. On March 1, 2018, Mitchell was named the Western Conference rookie this month for the third time this season for a match played in February. On April 10, he set a newbie's record for most 3s in a season with 186 3s in a 119-79 victory over the Golden State Warriors. On April 12, at the end of the regular season, Mitchell was named Rookie Western Conference Conference for March and April.

In Mitchell's playoff debut against Oklahoma City Thunder on April 15, he clocked 27 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. However, during the game he bruises his legs and is questioned for Game 2. He finally plays in Game 2, scoring 28 points, including 13 in the 4th quarter to lead the Jazz to a 102-95 victory. Mitchell set a new record for points by shooting guards in their first two-game post with 55 points, breaking Michael Jordan's record of 53 points. Mitchell led the Jazz to a 4-2 series win over the Thunder, averaging 28.5 points on the game with 46.2% shooting. His 171 points in the series were the third most ever by a rookie in his first six playoff games, behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. His 38 points in Game 6 (on 14-of-26 shots) marked the highest score output by a rookie in the winning series since 1980. On May 22, 2018, he was named to the First NBA All-Rookie Team.
