History
The city is named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, who founded a temporary trading post in the area around 1733. He was a French soldier stationed in Kaskaskia between 1704-1720 in the French colony of La Louisiane. The "Cape" in the city's name is called cape stone overlooking the Mississippi River; it was then destroyed by railroad construction. In early 1765, a bend in the Mississippi River, about 60 miles (97 km) south of Ste village in France. Genevieve, has been referred to as Cape Girardot or Girardeau.
Girardeau settlement is said to have originated from 1793 when the Spanish government, which had acquired Louisiana in 1764 following the French defeat in the Seven Years War, awarded Louis Lorimier, France-Canada, the right to establish a trading post. This gave him trade privileges and vast land around his post. Lorimier was made district commander and prosperous from the sale of his land and trade with indigenous peoples, such as the residents of Ozark Bluff and the Mississippians.
Also in 1793, Baron Carondelet gave land near Cape Girardeau to the Black Bob Band from Hathawekela Shawnee, who had migrated from across the Mississippi River. The band is known as Cape Girardeau Shawnee. They succeeded in refusing the abolition of the Indian Territory with the remaining Shawnee tribes until 1833.
In 1799, the American settlers established the first English school west of the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau in a landmark called Mount Tabor, named by settlers for the Biblical Mount of Tabor.
The town of Cape Girardeau was founded in 1808, before the Missouri statehood. It was re-integrated as a city in 1843. The arrival of a steamship in 1835 and associated river trade stimulated the development of Cape Girardeau as the largest port on the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee.
During the Civil War, the city was the site of the Battle of Cape Girardeau on 26 April 1863. The Union of Unions and Confederates engaged in a small four-hour battle, each suffering victim generally believed to be under double digits.
For years tourists had to use the ferry to cross the Mississippi River from Cape Girardeau. In September 1928 the bridge was completed between Missouri and Illinois. Built to accommodate the car, its width is 20 feet (6.1 m) below that time standard.
The Old Federal Courthouse, located on Broadway and Fountain Streets and built in the late 1940s, is the subject of the US Supreme Court case while it is being developed. In United States v. Carmack, 329 U.S 230 (1946), the Court upheld the authority of the federal government under the 1888 Crime Act to seize land owned by the state or locality.
In December 2003, the "Old Bridge" was replaced by a new four-lane cable-stay bridge across the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau. The official name is "Bill Emerson Warning Bridge." In honor of former US Representative Bill Emerson (R-Mo.) Two bridge towers reach a height of about 91 meters. The "Old Bridge" was completed in September 1928 to replace the ferry and was only 20 feet (6.1 m) wide. The "Old Bridge" was destroyed after Emerson Bridge opened.
The town of Cape Girardeau was recognized in January 2008 by First Lady Laura Bush as the Preserve America Community for her work in surveying and protecting historic buildings.
The city is known as "The City of Roses" because of a 9-mile (14 km) stretch of road that was once filled with dozens of rose bushes. Although there used to be many prominent rose gardens around the community, some of these gardens have been preserved. The city is also known as "Cape Girardeau: Where the River Turns A Thousand Tale," due to the history of the city and the Mississippi River.
Historic Buildings
Many murals commemorate the history of the city. The largest is the Mississippi River Tales Mural, which is located in the city center of the city's flood city. Covering nearly 18,000 square feet (1,700 m 2 ), it runs along the shopping district in the city center and features 24 panels. Behind the flooded wall is Riverfront Cape Cape Girardeau Park, where river docks and visitors can see the Mississippi River.
