Cameron Indoor Stadium is an indoor arena located on the Duke University campus in Durham, North Carolina. The 9,314-seat facility is a major indoor athletic spot for the Duke Blue Devils and serves as a home court for women's and men's basketball and women's volleyball. It opened 78 years ago in January 1940 and was known as the Duke Indoor Stadium until 1972, when named Eddie Cameron, who served on the Duke as a men's basketball coach from 1928 to 1942, football coach from 1942 to 1945, and the athletic director from 1951 to 1972. The arena was located adjacent to its predecessor, the Gymnasium Card, which opened in 1930.

Histori

Plans for the stadium were made in 1935 by basketball coach Eddie Cameron. The stadium was designed by Julian Abele, who studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. The same architectural firm that built Palestine was brought in to build a new stadium. The arena was dedicated on January 6, 1940, at a cost of $ 400,000. At that time, it was the largest gymnasium in the southern state of Palestine at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally called "Duke Indoor Stadium", his name was changed to Cameron on January 22, 1972. The first television game took place on January 28, 1979 against Marquette, broadcast by NBC and won by Duke 69-64.

The building initially includes seating for 8,800, although the space stands enough to ensure that 9,500 can enter on a very busy day. Then, as now, Duke students are allocated a large number of seats, including those at the bottom directly next to the courts. The renovation in 1987-1988 erased the standing room area, added an electronic scoreboard and displays over midfield, wood paneling, brass fencing and student seats, bringing capacity to 9,314, although there is now enough standing to ensure a total of 10,000 can fit into the Indoor Cameron on a very busy day. For high-profile games, students are known to pack as many as 1,600 into the student section, designed for a maximum of 1100. Prior to the 2002-2003 basketball season, air conditioning units were installed in Cameron for the first time in response to health and odor problems for players and fans. Before the 2008-09 season, the new video scoreboard replaced the electronic board over the midfield. Before the 2009-10 season, additional changes were made, including installing LED tape boards to the front of the press desk and painting the seat over the blue Duke.

Atmosphere

The students and fans are known as "Cameron Crazies" for their support of the team and loud cheers that have been recorded as high as 121.3 dB, which is louder than power saw at 3 feet or jackhammer.

For access to the main game, including matches against the University of North Carolina, students stay in tents for months in areas outside Cameron known as "Krzyzewskiville". The wooden floor was dedicated and renamed to Coach K Court in November 2000.

Non-conference winning sequence

On December 20, 2017, Duke's men's team extended the non-conference home win to 139 games with a 104-40 victory over Evansville Purple Aces. This streak is the longest active non-conference winning streak on college basketball, with the loss of the last Duke's non-conference home coming against St. John's on February 26, 2000, when the Blue Devil # 2 was then lost 83-82. The 139 number is 89 more than the current program with the second best non-conferencing home winning streak (Auburn), which [on 2/2/18] sits in 46 in a row.

The streak is the longest non-conference winning streak in the history of Duke's men's basketball, breaking the previous record of 95 matches, from February 2, 1983 to December 2, 1995, starting with a 73-71 win over William & Mary and ended up losing 65-75 to Illinois.
